Chapter 5

While Charlotte addressed the staff in the ballroom, Arthur Vance was frantically packing his personal belongings in his ground-floor executive office. Drawers were pulled out and emptied into cardboard boxes; expensive crystal decanters, signed photographs with politicians, and confidential USB drives containing years of illicit communications were hurriedly swept aside. His hands shook violently as he dropped a heavy glass paperweight onto the polished hardwood floor, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards.
The office door pushed open quietly. Two men in dark suits stepped into the room, blocking the only exit. They did not wear badges visible on their lapels, but the tailored efficiency of their posture made their affiliation unmistakable.
Arthur spun around, his breath catching in his throat. "You can't be in here. This is a private office. I demand to speak with my legal counsel immediately."
"Your legal counsel dropped you fifteen minutes ago, Arthur," the taller man said smoothly, stepping further into the room. He reached into his breast pocket and produced a folded document. "Federal indictment number four-four-zero-nine. Grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate identity theft, and obstruction of justice."
Arthur staggered back against the mahogany bookshelf, knocking several heavy leather-bound volumes to the floor. "There must be some mistake. I am the managing director. I negotiated the international contracts that keep this property solvent. Without me, the hotel will default on its primary mortgages within forty-eight hours."
"The hotel is already under new management," the investigator replied coldly. He motioned toward the door, where a pair of local police officers waited to assist with the formal arrest. "Charlotte Vail has already authorized a complete debt restructuring with the primary creditors. Your services are no longer required, Arthur."
Desperation flared in Arthur's chest. He looked frantically toward the window, as if contemplating a desperate escape, but realized his office was on the sixth floor overlooking a secure interior courtyard. His knees buckled slightly, and he grasped the edge of the desk for support. The illusion of power, carefully maintained through intimidation, bribery, and ruthless ambition, had dissolved into thin air.
"Tell her..." Arthur choked out, his voice cracking with humiliation. "Tell Charlotte... it was just business."

"She knows it was business, Arthur," the investigator said as the police officers stepped forward, gently but firmly placing cold steel cuffs around Arthur's wrists. "That's why she didn't send debt collectors. She sent the Department of Justice."
As they escorted Arthur out through the private side exit, avoiding the curious glances of the hotel guests in the main lobby, the final pillar of the corrupt administration crumbled. The Grand Aurelia was finally free of its parasites, entering a quiet, uncertain transition toward a difficult but honest future.
