Chapter 8 - The Uninvited Guest

Standing in the doorway was not a police officer, nor one of Eleanor’s movers. It was a tall, angular man in an expensive bespoke black suit, wearing leather gloves despite being indoors. His face was entirely unknown to Maya, but the cold, calculating smile playing across his lips sent a shiver straight down her spine.
“Mr. Vance,” the man said smoothly, his voice carrying a crisp, transatlantic accent. “I’m afraid Clara’s paranoia always got the better of her. She really thought she could outsmart the board.”
Marcus instinctively stepped in front of Maya, throwing his arm out defensively. “Step back, Julian. The police are already processing the property line. You have no legal standing here.”
“Legal standing?” Julian chuckled softly, stepping across the threshold with calm, measured strides. “My dear attorney, legality is merely a temporary agreement between people who haven't yet realized they’ve lost. Clara knew that. That’s why she tried to hide the hard drive.”
Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs. She backed up against the heavy mahogany desk, her fingers brushing against the edge of the bottom drawer her mother’s digital note had just warned her about.
“Who are you?” Maya demanded, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to sound brave.
Julian turned his gaze toward her, his eyes cold and devoid of human warmth. “I am the person your father reported to, Maya. And your mother was far too inquisitive for her own good. She discovered what our pharmaceutical division was testing in those overseas facilities, and she decided to trade millions of lives for a misplaced sense of moral clarity.”
“She exposed illegal human trials,” Marcus spat out, his hand sliding subtly toward his coat pocket where his phone rested. “She did what any decent human being would do.”
“Decency doesn't balance global portfolios, Mr. Vance,” Julian replied smoothly. He reached inside his jacket, and before Marcus could react, Julian produced a small, suppressed pistol, leveling it directly at the attorney's chest.
Maya gasped, terror freezing her limbs in place. The high emotional tension in the room snapped like a stretched wire.
“Step away from the desk, Maya,” Julian instructed calmly, gesturing with the barrel of the weapon. “Open the bottom drawer. Hand me the hard drive, and no one else has to get hurt tonight. Resist, and Mr. Vance joins your mother sooner than planned.”

Marcus tensed, his muscles coiling like a spring, preparing to lunge despite the weapon pointed right at him.
