Chapter 1 - The Cold Threshold

The polished marble floor of the foyer reflected the harsh, white glare of the modern chandelier, though the illumination brought no warmth to the cavernous space. Maya clutched her small black purse against her chest like a shield, her knuckles white through the dark fabric of her purple knit sweater. Tears tracked hot and fast down her cheeks, blurring the edges of the high-end luxury furniture she had grown up with.
Across from her stood Eleanor, the red-haired woman whose sharp-edged blouse and beige trousers matched the sterile, calculated redesign she had forced upon the house. Eleanor’s face twisted in an ugly, triumphant sneer as she stepped forward, invading Maya’s personal space.
“Your mother is gone,” Eleanor yelled, her voice echoing off the high ceiling with calculated cruelty. “Now this is my house!”
“Let go of me!” Maya cried, her voice cracking as Eleanor’s hand gripped her shoulder, shoving her hard toward the massive mahogany front door. Maya stumbled over the imported Persian rug, her dark jeans scraping against the floorboards as she fought for balance.
“This was my mother’s home!” Maya wept bitterly, her hands flying up to clutch her face in total despair. The bitter sting of betrayal burned deeper than any physical blow.
“Get out!” Eleanor snapped, pointing a manicured finger directly at the heavy brass handle of the front door. “You don’t belong here anymore!”
High above them on the landing, heavy footsteps creaked against the rich grain of the wooden stairs. Maya looked up through her tear-blurred vision, praying for an intervention, a spark of the father she used to know. Tall and imposing in a charcoal grey suit and tie, David descended the steps with a stern, authoritative expression carved deep into his features. The high emotional tension in the room froze the very air in Maya's lungs as her father finally reached the lower hall, his dark eyes locking onto the chaos.
“Amanda, what are you doing to my daughter?” David asked sternly, his voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
Eleanor froze, the cruel smirk instantly melting from her face, replaced by a trembling, calculated mask of utter innocence. She turned to David, tears welling in her eyes with terrifying speed.
“David, thank goodness you’re here,” Eleanor whimpered, her voice dropping an octave into a fragile, trembling whisper. “She attacked me. She refused to accept the probate documents from her mother's estate and started throwing things. I was only trying to protect myself and guide her out before things got worse.”

Maya stood paralyzed, her mouth dropping open in sheer disbelief at the sheer audacity of the lie. She looked from Eleanor’s fake tears to her father’s stern, unreadable face, realizing with a cold jolt in her stomach that David didn't just believe Eleanor—he had helped write the script.
