Chapter 11 - The Digital Vault

The basement server room of Ashwood Manor hummed with the quiet, relentless power of high-end mainframes—a hidden tech hub David had installed years ago for his architectural firm's rendering farm. The cool air smelled of ozone and hot plastic, a stark contrast to the luxurious warmth of the rest of the mansion.

Marcus sat at the primary console, his temple bandaged where Julian had struck him, typing rapidly into a command-line interface. Maya stood behind him, watching the progress bar on the dual monitors crawl steadily upward.

“Encryption verified,” Marcus muttered, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. “We’re copying the core database directly to your backup drive now. Once this completes, not even the federal government can scrub these files without our decryption key.”

The door to the server room swung open silently. Detective Miller stepped inside, accompanied by a tall woman in a crisp navy blue federal prosecutor’s suit. Her silver-streaked hair was tied back in a severe bun, and her expression was as sharp as cut glass.

“Mr. Vance, Miss Vance,” the woman said, introducing herself without preamble. “I am Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Chen. I’ve reviewed the initial extraction logs from the library safe. What you are holding in your hands represents a multi-billion-dollar corporate conspiracy.”

Maya clutched her small black purse tightly, keeping the backup drive close. “My father and Eleanor knew everything, didn't they? They weren't just running a company—they were trading human lives for profit.”

Sarah Chen stepped closer, her eyes softening slightly as she looked at the young teenager standing in a purple knit sweater that suddenly looked far too big for her. “Your father was the chief financial architect of the entire operation, Maya. He used Ashwood Manor as collateral for illegal loans to fund the pharmaceutical trials overseas. When your mother discovered the truth and tried to pull the plug, they decided she was a liability.”

“And now?” Maya asked, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper. “What happens to the house? What happens to me?”

“The estate is currently under federal asset forfeiture,” prosecutor Chen explained gently. “However, because your mother placed the primary residential trust in your name forty-eight hours before her passing—and because you aided in securing this evidence—you are legally emancipated and granted protected witness status.”

Before Maya could process the monumental weight of the prosecutor's words, the primary monitor in front of Marcus suddenly flashed red. A massive data alert filled the screen, accompanied by an automated warning sound.

“Wait,” Marcus said, his eyes widening in horror as he stared at the scrolling logs. “Someone is attempting a remote wipe from an external server. And the IP address is originating from inside federal custody.”
