Chapter 5

The crystal chandelier above the formal dining table cast a brilliant, cold sparkle over the impeccably set porcelain plates and polished silverware. Silence hung heavily in the room, broken only by the delicate clinking of silver against bone china as Daniel methodically cut his roast beef. Victoria sat at the opposite end of the long mahogany table, her posture immaculate, her emerald-silk evening gown shimmering under the lights. She sipped her wine slowly, her eyes fixed on Daniel with a calculated, predatory stillness. The empty chair between them seemed to echo with the phantom presence of the child banished just two nights prior. “The house feels rather quiet this evening, doesn’t it, Daniel?” Victoria remarked smoothly, breaking the tension with a tone of casual indifference. “Without that wretched little beggar underfoot, the staff can finally return to maintaining the proper standards of this estate.”

Daniel paused, his knife resting against the edge of his plate. He raised his eyes to meet hers, his expression entirely devoid of warmth. “Quiet, perhaps. But peace and silence are not always the same thing, Victoria. Sometimes silence is merely the sound of a trap being reset.” Victoria’s hand froze mid-gesture as she raised her wine glass to her lips. A microscopic tightening of her jaw was her only outward reaction to his pointed remark. “You speak in riddles tonight, Daniel. Is this about the unfortunate incident with the servant girl? Surely you aren’t still brooding over a common thief.” Daniel set his silverware down with deliberate slowness, the metallic clatter shattering the refined atmosphere of the room. “She wasn't a thief, Victoria. And we both know it. That pocket watch didn't find its way into her pocket by magic. Just as certain legal documents didn't vanish from the east gallery without human intervention.”

The color drained slightly from Victoria’s face, though her voice remained dangerously steady. “Are you accusing your own wife of planting evidence and thievery under our own roof, Daniel? Because of a lying waif from the slums?” Daniel pushed his chair back and stood up, walking slowly around the length of the long table until he stood directly beside her chair. He leaned down slightly, speaking in a low, resonant tone that brooked no argument. “I am not accusing you of anything yet, Victoria. I am simply informing you that the investigation into the Sterling estate archives has officially begun. Every document, every ledger, and every visitor who has crossed this threshold in the last five years is being accounted for.” Victoria turned her head sharply upward, her eyes flashing with sudden, venomous fury. The cold, aristocratic mask slipped completely, revealing the desperate, cornered woman beneath. “You are ruining everything we have built, Daniel, all for a nameless nobody!” she hissed. Daniel straightened his jacket, looking down at her with profound pity. “We built nothing, Victoria. You built a fortress of lies, and the walls are finally starting to crumble.”
