Chapter 10

The grandfather clock in the main foyer struck the midnight hour, its deep, resonant chimes vibrating through the floorboards of the entire estate. Inside the library, the struggle had ended in an uneasy, exhausted stalemate. Daniel stood by the window, watching the steady drizzle of rain outside wash against the glass, while Victoria sat rigidly in the wingback chair, staring blankly into the cold hearth. The leather document case lay open and unattended on the desk. Daniel knew that time was running out; Arthur Pendelton was undoubtedly moving his own chess pieces in the shadows, and leaving Lily unprotected at Mrs. Gable’s cottage for another night was a risk he could no longer justify taking. He needed to bring Lily back to the main house under his direct protection, where the legal weight of his name could shield her from whatever desperate measures Victoria and her accomplices might attempt next.

Moving with quiet determination, Daniel slipped out of the side door of the library, bypassing the main hallway where Pendelton was likely lurking. He grabbed his heavy grey overcoat from the coat rack by the back entrance and stepped out into the chilly night air. The rain had slowed to a persistent, heavy mist that coated the cobblestones in a slick layer of glistening moisture. The walk to Mrs. Gable’s cottage was short, barely ten minutes across the damp estate grounds, but every shadow cast by the old oak trees seemed to harbor unseen watchers. Daniel quickened his pace, his leather boots splashing through the puddles with a steady, determined rhythm. When he finally reached the small brick cottage, the windows were dark save for a single amber glow flickering from the back bedroom. He knocked twice on the heavy oak door using the secret rhythm he and Mrs. Gable had agreed upon earlier that evening.

The door swung open instantly, revealing Mrs. Gable’s pale, anxious face. “Mr. Daniel! Thank God you’re here,” she whispered frantically, pulling him inside out of the mist. “Mr. Pendelton was lurking near the conservatory just an hour ago. He threatened me, sir. He knows we’re closing in on them.” Daniel nodded grimly, hanging his damp coat on the brass peg. “I know, Martha. That’s why we cannot wait until morning. We are bringing Lily back to the estate right now, under my roof where I can watch over her every second.” Lily emerged from the back bedroom, wrapped in her dark blue hooded coat, her small face solemn and resolute far beyond her years. She looked up at Daniel with absolute trust in her dark eyes. “I’m ready, Mr. Daniel,” she said softly, her voice steady. Daniel placed a protective hand on her shoulder, feeling the fierce surge of paternal instinct that anchored his soul. Together, the three of them stepped out into the misty night, unaware that a pair of cold, watchful eyes was tracking their every move from the edge of the surrounding treeline.
