Chapter 2

The grand parlor of the Sterling estate was a sanctuary of wealth and shadows, lit only by the crackling amber flames of the hearth. Daniel stood by the polished mahogany mantelpiece, the heavy silence of the room pressing against his eardrums like lead. In his palm, the recovered silver pocket watch felt impossibly heavy, its rhythmic ticking a stark contrast to the turbulent thoughts racing through his mind. Victoria sat stiffly across from him on the velvet settee, her grey coat replaced by a severe black evening dress that matched her obsidian gaze. She refused to look at the fire, keeping her chin tilted upward in an automatic defense mechanism. The door creaked open just an inch, revealing Lily peeking in from the hallway, wrapped in a thick wool blanket provided by the sympathetic household cook, Martha. Daniel caught the movement out of the corner of his eye and felt a sharp pang of guilt pierce his conscience.

“Explain this, Victoria,” Daniel said finally, his voice unnaturally calm as he placed the silver watch squarely in the center of the marble tabletop. The metallic clink sounded like a gavel striking a block in the quiet room. Victoria let out a slow, measured breath, smoothing the fabric of her skirt with pale, manicured fingers. She did not raise her voice, knowing that volume was the weapon of the desperate. “You are entirely too sentimental, Daniel,” she began, her tone dripping with calculated condescension. “That child is nothing more than an orphan pulled from the pauper’s ward to scrub floors. When I found her hovering near your private study with this exact heirloom in her ragged pocket, the conclusion was painfully obvious. She is a thief. She intended to steal from our home and flee into the night.” Daniel listened intently, his eyes narrowing as he analyzed every inflection, every micro-expression playing across her composed face. He knew Victoria’s ambition; it was a hungry, restless beast that consumed everything in its path.

“She denies it,” Daniel countered quietly, stepping away from the fireplace to bridge the distance between them. “And I know for a fact that Lily cannot even read the cipher engraved on the back of this casing. The latch requires a specific double-press mechanism known only to direct descendants of the Sterling line. How did a pauper child learn to open it, Victoria?” A microscopic twitch of hesitation betrayed the woman on the settee. Her eyes flicked toward the doorway where Lily stood hidden, before returning to fixate on Daniel with renewed hostility. “She is cunning far beyond her years, a common street rat trained in the darkest arts of deception,” Victoria spat back, her cool veneer cracking slightly at the edges. Daniel shook his head slowly, a grim realization dawning upon him. The watch had not been found in Lily’s pocket by accident; it had been planted there with surgical precision. The question burning in his mind was no longer whether the girl was guilty, but rather how far his own wife was willing to go to secure total control over the estate.
