Chapter 6 - The Brass Key

The cold metal of the handcuffs clicked sharply around Arthur’s wrists, biting into his skin as two burly police officers jerked him to his feet. The flashing red and blue lights from the squad cars outside painted the ornate walls of the grand ballroom in violent, pulsing shades of crimson and azure.

“Step back, sir. Do not resist,” Captain Thomas ordered, his expression completely devoid of emotion as he watched Arthur with narrowed, skeptical eyes.

Arthur didn't fight them. His entire focus remained locked on the small brass key resting innocently on the mahogany floor where it had fallen from his lap. Before the officers could drag him away, Arthur managed to kick the heavy key beneath the hem of his tailored blue suit trousers, sliding it safely against the heel of his shoe just as Captain Thomas bent down to inspect the area.

“Search him,” Elena commanded sharply from across the room, her voice dripping with venom as she clutched her diamond necklace like a lifeline. She had already managed to compose herself, transforming from a panicked socialite into the grieving, terrified wife of a deranged man. “He has classified documents on him. He stole them from the foundation earlier tonight. He’s been unstable for months, Captain. Everyone on the board can attest to his erratic behavior.”

Captain Thomas straightened up, eyeing Elena with a mixture of professional caution and suspicion. “Mrs. Vance, you and your husband will both need to come down to the precinct for formal questioning. But right now, my primary concern is securing this crime scene and identifying the child.”

“No!” Lily cried out, her small voice cutting through the air as a female officer gently lifted her up by the arms. “Don't let them take me! They're the ones who hurt my mom!”

Arthur strained against the grip of the officers, his chest heaving with suppressed fury. “Leave her alone!” he shouted, struggling forward before a sharp blow to his ribs from an officer's baton forced the air from his lungs. “She’s a child! If you touch her, I swear to God—”

“Save your speeches for the judge, Mr. Vance,” Captain Thomas interrupted coldly, gesturing for the officers to escort him toward the exit. “You're looking at a first-degree murder charge, a public safety violation, and conspiracy. Your political career is over, and your life is effectively finished.”

As they dragged Arthur past the shattered double doors and out into the cold, pouring rain, the flashing camera bulbs of the waiting press blinded him. Reporters shouted overlapping questions like a pack of starving wolves.

“Mr. Vance! Did you kill your security chief to cover up embezzlement?”

“Is it true the little girl is your illegitimate daughter?”

“Will the Vance Foundation survive this scandal?!”

Arthur kept his chin held high, refusing to give the media the satisfaction of seeing him break. Inside his shoe, the heavy brass key dug painfully into his arch, a tiny, tangible anchor reminding him of the mission ahead. They could lock him in a cell, they could strip him of his title, and they could let Elena burn his reputation to ash, but they couldn't erase the truth.

They placed him in the back of a damp, claustrophobic police cruiser, slamming the metal door shut with a heavy, echoing thud. The car pulled away from the grand estate, navigating the winding private roads away from the glittering ballroom and toward the dark, unforgiving holding cells of the central precinct.

Hours later, locked inside a windowless interrogation room with nothing but a steel table and a flickering fluorescent light overhead, the heavy metal door finally creaked open. It wasn't Captain Thomas who walked in.

It was a man in a tailored grey suit with cold, calculating eyes—Marcus Vance, Arthur’s ruthless uncle and the hidden power behind the entire family dynasty.

Marcus slowly pulled out a chair opposite Arthur, sitting down with deliberate slowness as he slid a thick manila folder across the table.

“You truly are a disappointment, Arthur,” Marcus said quietly, a sickening smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “You had everything—wealth, power, the governorship practically in your hands. And you threw it all away for a dead woman's bastard.”

Arthur leaned forward, the handcuffs clinking loudly against the steel table as a dark, dangerous grin spread across his face. “You think you've won, Uncle? You didn't find the key.”

Marcus’s polite smile vanished instantly, his eyes darting down to Arthur's bound hands before freezing in sudden terror.
