Chapter 2 - The Velvet Secret

The silence inside the grand ballroom grew oppressive, heavy enough to suffocate the flickering flames of the crystal chandeliers. Arthur remained frozen on one knee, his hand hovering inches from the small, frayed cloth resting in the little girl's palm. The ring—that familiar, haunting shade of deep sapphire—seemed to pulse with a life of its own under the glittering lights.
Elena stepped forward again, her heels clicking sharply against the polished wood like a countdown timer. Her face had lost its usual composure, replaced by a pale, strained mask of absolute panic.
“Arthur, do not dare touch that filthy thing,” Elena warned, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady. “It is a replica. A cheap forgery designed to exploit the upcoming election and destroy everything we have worked decades to build. Security is already at the doors. Let them handle it.”
Arthur ignored her entirely. His breath hitched as he reached out, his calloused fingertips carefully brushing past the girl's small, trembling fingers to take the blue gemstone ring. The metal was surprisingly warm, radiating a strange, familiar heat that sent a violent shiver down his spine. Caroline had always worn that exact ring during their stolen weekends away, long before the Vance family forced him into an arranged marriage with Elena and buried his past under layers of wealth and political ambition.
“Child,” Arthur whispered, his voice cracking as he looked directly into the girl's tear-filled blue eyes. “What did you say was inside the lining?”
The little girl swallowed hard, her lower lip trembling. “My mom... she said the ring box has a secret compartment. She made me promise to show you only when you asked about the truth.”
With trembling hands, Arthur flipped the small, faded velvet cloth over. Attached to the underside was a tiny, hidden flap secured by old, golden stitches. Without hesitating, Arthur caught the edge of the fabric with his fingernail and pulled. A tiny, folded scrap of yellowed parchment tumbled out, landing directly in the center of his open palm.
Elena lunged forward like a striking viper, her hand clawing toward the paper. “Give that to me!” she shrieked, breaking all decorum in front of the horrified guests.
Arthur jerked his hand back, standing up with sudden, towering force. He unfolded the parchment with shaking fingers, his eyes scanning the faded handwriting in the dim light. The ink was undeniably Caroline’s precise, elegant cursive. As his eyes tracked across the first line, the blood drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost in his tailored blue suit.

Before Arthur could read the rest of the confession, the grand ballroom doors blew open with a deafening crash, and a man in a dark trench coat rushed inside, shouting Arthur's name while aiming a heavy pistol directly at the little girl.
