Chapter 4 - Darkness and Blood

A collective gasp echoed through the cavernous ballroom as the crystal chandeliers went completely dark, leaving only the pale moonlight slicing through the towering arched windows. In the sudden blackout, chaos reached its absolute peak. The heavy scent of spilled champagne and expensive perfume hung thick in the humid air, mingling with the underlying terror of the unknown.

Arthur lunged blindly into the dark, his hands sweeping across the polished mahogany floor where the little girl had been standing just a second before.

“Lily!” Arthur shouted, using the name he had just seen scrawled at the bottom of Caroline’s yellowed note. “Lily, where are you?!”

“I'm here, Daddy!” a small, terrified voice cried out from somewhere near the base of the massive marble pillars.

Arthur scrambled across the slick floor, his knees slamming hard against the wood, ignoring the sharp pain. He reached out blindly, his fingers brushing against rough wool. He grabbed the fabric of the grey shawl and yanked the little girl into a tight, protective embrace. Her small heart was beating frantically against his chest like a trapped bird.

Suddenly, a blinding flash of gunfire tore through the darkness. The deafening crack of the pistol echoed off the marble walls, followed immediately by the sickening thud of a heavy body hitting the floor just a few feet away.

“Julian?!” Elena’s voice shrieked from the opposite side of the room, dripping with raw terror. “Julian, report! Who fired that shot?”

There was no answer from Julian. Only the sound of heavy, ragged breathing and a slow, rhythmic dripping noise—the sound of warm blood pooling onto the polished wood.

Arthur shielded Lily’s head with his hand, pressing her face into his blue suit jacket so she couldn't see the carnage unfolding around them. His mind raced at lightning speed. Someone else was in the ballroom. Someone who didn't want the truth about Caroline’s disappearance to ever come to light.

“Stay right here, do not move,” Arthur whispered urgently into Lily’s blonde hair, pressing her down behind the heavy base of a marble pillar.

“Don't leave me,” Lily sobbed softly, her small fingers clutching the fabric of his sleeve with desperate strength. “Please don't let them take me like they took Mom.”

“I won't let anyone touch you. I swear it,” Arthur promised, his voice hardening with a dangerous resolve that surprised even himself.

He rose slowly from the floor, his eyes straining to adjust to the pale moonlight. He felt along his belt line, remembering the antique silver-handled pocket knife his grandfather had given him—a useless weapon against a firearm, but better than nothing.

As his eyes finally adjusted to the shadows, a tall, silhouetted figure emerged near the shattered double doors of the ballroom. The intruder was standing directly over Julian’s motionless body, holding a smoking gun in one hand and something small and metallic in the other—the yellowed parchment Arthur had dropped during the chaos.

“Looking for this, Mr. Vance?” a cold, distorted voice echoed through the empty room.

Arthur stepped out from behind the pillar, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned pure white. “Hand over the note, and no one else has to die tonight.”

The figure let out a low, chilling laugh, sliding the stolen parchment into an inside pocket before stepping backward into the rainy night.

“You're too late, Arthur,” the voice sneered from the doorway. “The board already knows you have a bastard heir. The press has the photos. Your political career is dead—and you're next.”
