Chapter 7: A Mother's Defiance

The second intruder closed the distance in a heartbeat, his blade glinting coldly under the harsh light of the dropped flashlight. Eleanor braced herself, her footing firm on the splintered floorboards, but before the blade could descend, a heavy canvas sail dropped from the overhead rafters.

Sarah, using every ounce of her remaining strength, had pulled the release rope tied to the winch. The massive roll of heavy fabric crashed down directly onto the attacker’s shoulders, entangling him in thick canvas and knocking him off balance. He thrashed wildly, slashing blindly at the fabric as he tumbled backward out the broken doorway, swearing furiously into the night air.

"Get up, Mother!" Sarah gasped, clutching her bleeding side as she struggled to her feet, pulling Clara along with her. "They'll rally the others from the perimeter. We have to reach the main house through the old drainage tunnel."

Eleanor didn't hesitate. She retrieved the silver pocket watch from her pocket, ensuring the clasp was tightly shut, and grabbed the fallen intruder's flashlight. "The tunnel beneath the wine cellar?" she asked, her breathing steady despite the chaos.

"Yes. It leads straight up into the manor pantry," Sarah nodded, leaning heavily against Eleanor’s shoulder for support. The physical touch, the first genuine maternal contact they had shared in two decades, sent a wave of electric emotion through them both, but there was no time for tears. Survival demanded absolute focus.

They slipped out through the broken door into the freezing night, leaving the two bruised and disoriented thugs behind them in the boathouse. The wind whipped across the dark expanse of the lake, stinging their faces as they sprinted toward the stone retaining wall near the old boathouse foundation. Hidden beneath a heavy iron grate choked with dead leaves was the entrance to the forgotten brick tunnel.

Clara went down first, her small size making it easy to squeeze through the rusted bars that Eleanor pried open with the iron wrench. Sarah followed, gritting her teeth against the agonizing pain in her leg, sliding into the damp, echoing darkness below.

Eleanor paused at the threshold, casting one final, defiant glance back toward the sprawling shadows of the Blackwood forest. The men who had stolen her daughter’s life and terrorized her family were out there in the dark, but they had underestimated the unbreakable resolve of the Vance women. She descended into the tunnel, pulling the heavy iron grate shut behind them, plunging their pursuers into the cold, empty night.
