Chapter 10: The Master Study

The study was cast in deep shadows, illuminated only by the amber glow of a single desk lamp and the pale moonlight filtering through the tall arched windows. Two men in dark suits spun around in surprise as the heavy mahogany door swung open. One of them was Arthur Sterling’s personal head of security; the other was a slick corporate lawyer whose tailored suit could not hide the twitching panic in his eyes.

"Eleanor," the lawyer stammered, smoothing down his silk tie with a trembling hand. "We... we were just looking for you. The guests are asking when you'll return to the ballroom for the toast."

Eleanor did not blink. She stood framed in the doorway, her elegant high-neck beaded evening dress catching the dim light, her posture radiating absolute authority. "You were searching my private desk, Mr. Vance-Smith," she corrected coldly, stepping fully into the room and letting the heavy door click shut behind her.

The head of security took a slow, calculated step forward, his hand drifting instinctively toward his jacket pocket where a weapon was undoubtedly concealed. "Mrs. Vance, we suggest you turn around and go back downstairs. Certain complications have arisen regarding the estate holdings, and Mr. Sterling feels it best if you are... sequestered until matters are resolved."

"Sequestered in my own home?" Eleanor’s voice was a low, dangerous purr. She walked deliberately toward the mahogany desk, ignoring the security guard's threatening posture. "By the very men who murdered my husband and tried to erase my bloodline?"

The lawyer’s face drained of all color, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "That’s... that’s an absurd accusation. You have no proof—"

"I have everything I need," Eleanor interrupted sharply. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the heavy silver pocket watch, slamming it down onto the polished mahogany desk with a sharp metallic clatter. The locket flew open under the force of the impact, revealing the faded photograph of young Sarah alongside the tiny, hidden USB drive nestled neatly within the gear mechanism.

The security guard lunged forward, desperate to snatch the watch before Eleanor could reach the concealed wall terminal behind the painting of her late husband. But Eleanor was faster. With practiced precision, she pulled the small USB drive from the watch casing and slotted it directly into the hidden interface built into the desk lamp base.

A soft green light blinked on the desk console, followed instantly by the automated voice of the secure server: Access granted. Master archives unlocked.
