Chapter 6: The Breach

The wood near the left hinge splintered with a deafening crack as the crowbar bit deep into the aged timber. Dust and flecks of dry paint rained down onto Eleanor’s shoulders, but she did not flinch. She stood tall before the barricaded doors, the heavy iron wrench gripped tightly in her manicured hand, her posture as rigid as a marble statue.
"Mother, move away from the door!" Sarah cried out, shifting Clara further behind the workbench, shielding the child with her own broken body. "They have guns! They aren't playing games anymore!"
"Let them try," Eleanor replied, her voice dangerously calm, carrying an edge of absolute fury that had been suppressed for twenty long years. "This is my land. And they are trespassing."
Outside, the muffled voice of the intruder cursed loudly, followed by the sound of a booted foot kicking violently against the weakened wood. The door bowed inward, the hinges groaning under the immense pressure. With a final, splintering crash, the left door burst open, tearing the iron screws from the rotting frame and flooding the dim interior with the harsh, sterile light of industrial flashlights.
Two men stepped across the threshold. They wore dark tactical jackets, their faces half-hidden beneath black baseball caps, and one of them held a suppressed pistol aimed squarely at the center of the room. Their eyes swept past Eleanor, instantly locking onto Sarah and the little girl huddled behind the workbench.
"Well, look what the tide washed in," the lead intruder sneered, stepping forward with a cruel, calculated grin. "Old man Sterling sends his regards, Sarah. He thought you burned to a crisp twenty years ago. Shame we have to finish the job tonight."

Before the man could raise his weapon fully, Eleanor moved with terrifying speed. Years of refined elegance vanished beneath the primal instinct of a matriarch protecting her blood. She lunged forward, swinging the heavy iron wrench with both hands. The metal connected with the intruder’s wrist with a sickening crunch, sending the pistol clattering uselessly across the wooden floorboards.
The man screamed in pain, clutching his broken arm while stumbling backward into the doorframe. His partner swore fiercely, dropping his flashlight and drawing a heavy hunting knife from his belt as he lunged toward Eleanor with murder in his eyes.
