Chapter 8 - The Hidden Flash Drive

Elena’s hand came out of her pocket holding a small, black USB flash drive, its plastic casing scratched and worn down from years of being carried against her skin. Detective Miller’s eyes flicked instantly to the small device, the calm professional demeanor vanishing for a split second as a predatory gleam entered his expression.

"Smart girl," Miller murmured, taking half a step forward. "I was wondering where the backup ledger went after the safe house on 4th Street burned down."

Marcus cursed under his breath, lunging toward Elena, but Miller was faster. With practiced efficiency, the detective drew a small, matte-black service pistol from his shoulder holster, keeping the barrel pointed steadily at the floor between them.

"Don't do it, Marcus," Miller warned. "One false move and I call the tactical team waiting in the alley. They aren't here to negotiate terms this time."

Malik stood frozen against the kitchen counter, his mind racing through the wreckage of his entire existence. Every memory he had—birthday cakes bought with stolen cash, family trips paid for by extortion, and a college fund built on the backs of broken lives—dissolved into a hollow joke. He wasn't Malik. He wasn't even a free man. He was just a ghost kept alive in a cage of lies.

"What's on that drive?" Malik asked, his voice dead and flat.

Elena looked back at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Everything, Malik. The names of every cop, judge, and politician who took payments to look the other way while your real family was destroyed. If Miller gets this drive, those people will bury us so deep nobody will ever find our bones."

"And if I get it," Miller countered smoothly, "every single person involved in the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme goes away for the rest of their natural lives. Including the boy who cashed the checks."

Marcus stepped directly in front of Elena, shielding her with his broad frame while his eyes locked onto Malik. "She’s not giving it to him, Malik. Not because of us... but because of what's on the third partition of that drive."

"What's on it?" Malik demanded, stepping away from the counter.

Marcus didn't answer right away. He reached into his own pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key.
