Chapter 11 - The Choice on the Floor

The flash drive hovered over the green bills like a pendulum ready to drop. Malik looked at the small piece of plastic, realizing that every single person in this room—Miller, Vance, Marcus, and Elena—was willing to trade his entire future just to secure whatever data was stored inside its memory chips.

"Stop," Malik said, his voice cutting through the heavy tension with unexpected authority.

Everyone froze. Even Vance, with his suppressed carbine leveled at Miller, glanced sideways at the young man standing against the kitchen counter.

"You want the drive? You want the keys?" Malik asked, stepping forward past Marcus and standing directly in the center of the room, surrounded by the scattered hundred-dollar bills. "You want to tear my life apart because of some war you all started before I was old enough to tie my own shoes?"

Miller sneer returned. "You don't understand the scale of what's happening here, kid. You're holding evidence in a federal conspiracy. Hand it over or you'll spend the next thirty years sharing a cell with your surrogate father."

"And you?" Malik turned his gaze to Vance. "Are you going to protect me, or are you just going to archive my name in another black-site filing cabinet?"

Vance didn't answer immediately. He lowered the barrel of his carbine by a fraction of an inch. "We protect the integrity of the investigation, kid. Once the files are decrypted, your identity is restored."

"My identity?" Malik let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "My real name belongs to a dead baby. My mother is a ghost hiding in an unmarked grave. And the only family I've ever known has been lying to me every single day of my life. What identity is left to restore?"

Elena stepped forward, her hand trembling as she held out the flash drive toward Malik instead of either of the armed men. "It's yours, Malik. Your mother left it for you to decide. If you give it to Miller, they win. If you give it to Vance, they use us. But if you walk out that back door right now... you take the truth with you."

Marcus’s eyes widened in alarm. "Elena, no! The county road is crawling with their perimeter teams. He won't make it two blocks!"

"He'll make it," Elena said, her voice fierce and unyielding. "Because unlike us, he doesn't have blood on his hands."

Malik looked down at the black USB drive in her palm, then reached down and picked up the tarnished silver key from the coffee table.

Before either Miller or Vance could react, Malik turned on his heel and bolted down the dark hallway toward the back fire exit.
