Chapter 7 - The Stolen Name

"That's a lie," Malik gasped, shaking his head so hard his short black afro whipped back and forth. "My mother gave me her maiden name. I grew up in this city. I went to public school."

Detective Miller sighed, a sound that carried the heavy weight of bureaucratic exhaustion. He pulled a second document from his coat pocket—a yellowed, water-stained hospital birth record from a county three states away. He held it out toward Malik, but didn't force him to take it.

"Your mother wasn't a nurse, Malik. She was an accountant for the syndicate," Miller said quietly. "When the federal indictments came down in 2019, she and Marcus took the fall by disappearing. They took the child of a dead man, gave you his papers, and hid you in plain sight so the bosses would think you were just another collateral casualty."

Marcus stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Malik’s shoulder. This time, Malik didn't shrug him off; he was too numb to move.

"We gave you a chance at a real life," Marcus said, his voice surprisingly gentle. "We kept you away from the guns, away from the courts, away from the blood. All you had to do was keep your head down and work."

"And you made me a mule," Malik whispered, tears finally breaking free and tracking hot down his cheeks. "Every box I loaded, every pallet I moved... I was laundering the money that bought my own silence."

Miller looked down at the scattered green bills on the carpet. "Pick them up, son. Every single one of those bills has tracking dye on the edges. The moment you walked out of that warehouse with your paycheck today, my team was logging every serial number."

Elena stood up abruptly from the couch, her furry slippers scraping loudly against the floor. She stepped between Malik and the detective, her face twisted in sudden, desperate defiance.

"Leave him out of this, Miller," she snarled, her hand dipping quickly into the pocket of her burgundy button-down shirt. "He doesn't know anything about the offshore accounts. Take Marcus. Take me. But let the boy walk."
