Chapter 9 - The Descent into the Storm

The cold coastal rain hit Arthur’s face like buckshot, instantly soaking his light blue button-down shirt and sticking the dark fabric to his skin. The gravel path leading down the cliffside was slick with mud and loose shale, making every step a dangerous gamble. Ahead of him, the beam of Marcus’s flashlight cut erratic arcs through the driving rain, illuminating the jagged drop-off where the cliff plunged fifty feet straight into the churning, black ocean below.
"Stop right there, Marcus!" Arthur bellowed over the roar of the wind and the crashing waves against the rocks. He gripped the iron fireplace poker with both hands, his knuckles aching beneath the raw, inflamed burns.
Marcus didn't stop. He threw a quick glance over his shoulder, his trench coat billowing in the gale like the wings of a dark bird. "Keep running, Arthur! Let's see if your knees hold up better than your alibi!"
Behind them, Elena stood on the porch with Leo tucked securely under her arm. She had wrapped a heavy wool blanket around the boy’s shoulders, but she couldn't tear her eyes away from the terrifying chase unfolding down the cliff path. The red-knuckled boy shivered, not from the cold, but from the overwhelming gravity of the night. He pulled a small, rusted metal ring out of his pocket—a key he had quietly slipped off the ring while Marcus was distracted in the attic.
"Mom," Leo whispered into the howling wind, holding up the small key so only she could see it. "He dropped his spare ring. The lighthouse door isn't locked by that key he took. It opens with this one."
Elena stared at the small, antique key in her son's palm. The realization hit her with the force of a physical blow. Marcus thought he held all the cards, but Leo had unknowingly held the true master key all along.
"Where did you find this, sweetheart?" Elena asked, keeping her voice calm despite the panic tearing at her chest.
"In the pocket of the coat hanging by the back door," Leo answered simply. "The one Marcus wore when he first arrived."
Before Elena could process the tactical advantage they suddenly held, a terrifying sound echoed up from the bottom of the cliff path—a sharp, metallic clang followed by a muffled cry and the sudden, dead cut of Marcus’s flashlight beam.
Arthur had caught up to him.

Heart pounding in her throat, Elena grabbed Leo’s hand and began running down the treacherous cliff path herself, ignoring the mud sucking at her shoes and the freezing rain blinding her vision. The darkness swallowed them whole as they plunged down the winding trail toward the abandoned lighthouse, where the ultimate reckoning of the family’s dark past awaited them in the shadow of the crashing waves.
