Chapter 3 - The Manila Envelope

The cold night air rushed into the foyer, carrying the sharp, salty scent of the ocean and the unmistakable chill of impending ruin. The stranger standing on the porch was tall, wearing a charcoal trench coat that smelled faintly of cheap tobacco and damp earth. He didn't wait for an invitation; he simply pushed past Arthur with a casual arrogance that made the older man stumble backward onto the Persian rug.

"Good evening, family gathering," the stranger said smoothly, his eyes scanning the tense dining room with amusement. "I hope I’m not interrupting the main course."

Arthur slammed the front door shut, locking it with a sharp, echoing click. "You shouldn't be here, Marcus. We had an agreement," Arthur hissed, his voice dangerously low as he stepped directly into the man's path, effectively blocking his view of Elena and the boy.

Marcus chuckled, a dry, grating sound that lacked any warmth. "Agreements change, Arthur, especially when the price of silence doubles. Clara knows it. You know it. And soon, the authorities are going to find out how that coastal trust fund was really emptied."

From the dining room, Clara straightened her posture, her eyes gleaming with vindictive triumph. "I told you, Arthur. You can't outrun a paper trail, no matter how many times you swing that heavy fist of yours."

Elena stepped out from the dining area, her face set in a mask of rigid determination. She let go of Leo’s shoulder, kneeling down to look her son directly in the eyes. "Leo, sweetheart, go up to your bedroom and lock the door. Do not come out for anything. Do you understand?"

Leo nodded slowly, his small face pale, his red knuckles still throbbing. He cast one last worried look at the frying pan resting on the kitchen counter before turning and sprinting up the winding wooden staircase, his footsteps fading rapidly down the second-floor hallway.

Marcus watched the boy disappear upstairs, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his weathered face. "So, that's the heir apparent. The boy whose name is on the fraudulent deed." Marcus reached inside his trench coat and pulled out a thick manila envelope, slapping it heavily against his palm. "I pulled the original land registry files from the county archives this afternoon. Every single signature is forged."

Arthur lunged forward, his hand clawing at the envelope, but Marcus sidestepped effortlessly, holding the prize just out of reach.

"Ah-ah, Arthur," Marcus warned, his smile vanishing instantly. "Touch me again, and I walk straight down to the local precinct with these documents."

Before Arthur could retaliate, Elena stepped between them, her hand snatching the manila envelope right out of Marcus’s grip with shocking speed. She tore the flap open in one swift motion, pulling out the papers inside. Her eyes scanned the top page, and the color drained entirely from her face as she uncovered a hidden photograph paperclipped to the back.
