Chapter 10 - The Lighthouse Threshold

The heavy wooden door of the abandoned lighthouse loomed out of the swirling fog like the entrance to a crypt. The paint was entirely peeled away, exposing grey, rotting timber that groaned rhythmically under the relentless assault of the sea wind.

Arthur stood directly in front of the threshold, his chest heaving as he leaned heavily against the damp wall. The iron fireplace poker lay discarded in the mud a few feet away. Marcus was pinned against the rotting wood of the door, gasping for breath, with Arthur’s hand clamped firmly around the lapel of his sodden trench coat.

"Give me the files, Marcus," Arthur growled, his voice trembling with a desperate fury. "Hand them over right now, or I swear to God I'll throw you over this ledge."

Marcus let out a ragged, defiant laugh, even with the rain stinging his eyes. "You think... you think killing me stops the upload, Arthur? The packet is already queued. The moment my phone hits a cell tower at the bottom of the stairs, the prosecutor gets everything."

Elena reached the bottom of the cliff path, dragging Leo behind her. She emerged from the shroud of fog just in time to see Arthur draw his fist back, ready to strike Marcus across the face—the exact same violent motion that had brought Clara down earlier that evening.

"Arthur, stop!" Elena screamed, her voice cutting through the roar of the ocean like a siren.

Arthur froze, his fist hovering in the air. He looked back at Elena, his eyes wide and unhinged, completely consumed by the terror of losing everything he had built on a foundation of lies.

"He's going to destroy us, Elena!" Arthur yelled over the wind. "He has the confession! He has the photographs! We'll spend the rest of our lives behind bars!"

"And beating him to death is going to keep us out?" Elena countered sharply, stepping closer despite the danger. She reached out and grabbed Arthur’s forearm, pulling his hand down with a surprising, unyielding strength. "Look at our son, Arthur. Is this the legacy you want to leave him? Another generation soaked in blood and secrets?"

Leo stepped forward out of the shadows, holding the small antique key out in his raw, red-knuckled hand. He didn't look scared anymore; his young face was set with a solemn maturity that far exceeded his years.

"You don't need to fight him, Dad," Leo said quietly, his voice carrying clearly over the wind. "The files aren't on his phone. The server pinged out ten minutes ago when we crossed the ridge. There is no signal down here."

Marcus’s smug expression instantly vanished. He shoved Arthur away with a frantic burst of energy, pulling his smartphone from his pocket and staring at the screen. The display read No Service. The towering stone cliffs surrounding the cove completely blocked all cellular transmission.

"No... no, that's impossible," Marcus muttered, his face turning pale as he frantically waved the phone in the air, trying to catch a stray bar of reception.

Clara suddenly appeared from the dark path above, descending the cliff with a surprising speed for her age. She clutched a heavy, rusted iron crowbar in her wrinkled hands, her eyes fixed entirely on the rotting door of the lighthouse.

May you like

"The signal doesn't matter," Clara rasped, her breath pluming in the cold night air as she stepped up to the threshold. She jammed the tip of the crowbar into the rotted frame of the lighthouse door. "Because whatever is buried inside this vault isn't staying hidden for another minute."
