Chapter 7

The fluorescent lights of the county police station buzzed with a low, steady hum that felt entirely too loud after the quiet, tense atmosphere of the highway rest stop. Maya sat at a small wooden table in a private family consultation room, clutching a styrofoam cup of warm apple cider between both hands. The heat seeped slowly into her chilled fingers, helping to thaw the lingering numbness of the winter afternoon. Across the table, a female detective with kind eyes and a gentle voice was softly guiding her through the initial intake questions.

"Take all the time you need, sweetheart," Detective Miller said, setting down her pen and sliding a fresh box of tissues closer to the young girl's hand. "You don't have to tell me everything all at once. Just tell me what you feel comfortable sharing tonight." Maya nodded slowly, her eyes drifting toward the open door where her parents were speaking quietly with Officer Henderson in the hallway. She could see the exhausted set of her father's shoulders and the way her mother periodically wiped away tears of relief with the sleeve of her grey cardigan.

Maya recounted the events leading up to her disappearance with remarkable clarity, though her voice remained subdued and restrained. She described walking home from the community center library just as the winter sun was dipping below the horizon, the crunch of gravel behind her, and the sudden, suffocating feeling of a heavy canvas sack being pulled over her head before she could scream. She explained how she had been tossed into the back of the white van, her frantic efforts to scratch at the interior walls, and how the driver had silenced her with a harsh warning and a brutal blow to her face.

"He told me nobody would ever find me out on those interstate routes," Maya whispered, her lower lip trembling slightly before she regained her composure. "He said the stickers on the back were just to make people think it was a family delivery van. He laughed when I cried." Detective Miller listened intently, taking careful notes without interrupting or pushing for sensational details. The detective’s empathetic demeanor created a safe harbor where the raw truth could finally be laid bare without fear of judgment or disbelief.

When the formal interview concluded, Detective Miller closed her notebook and offered a reassuring smile. "You’ve been stronger than most adults would be in this situation, Maya. Your courage today gave us the exact leverage we needed to take that monster off the road permanently." Maya offered a faint, tired nod, feeling a heavy weight slowly lift from her chest. The nightmare was over, but the journey toward healing and wholeness was only just beginning beneath the humming lights of the station.
