Chapter 2

The heavy metallic thud of Officer Henderson’s heavy flashlight rapping against the rear doors of the white van echoed sharply across the desolate highway rest stop. Maya buried her face further into the comforting wool of her mother’s grey cardigan, unable to watch, yet entirely unable to look away. Her father stood like a statue beside them, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. Every detail of the unfolding scene felt etched in sharp, terrifying relief against the dull grey backdrop of the late afternoon sky.
Inside the van, a faint shifting sound broke the tense silence. Officer Henderson narrowed his eyes, his hand resting securely on the holster of his service weapon. He did not draw the gun, maintaining a disciplined, professional demeanor, but his posture was coiled like a spring. The bloodhound whined softly, its paws still resting against the bumper beneath the eerie cascade of colorful handprint stickers. Those bright, childish decals stood in sickening contrast to the grim reality of the investigation taking place on the bleak winter asphalt.
With a loud mechanical click, the manual lock on the driver’s side door finally engaged, turning from the inside. A shaft of pale interior light spilled out onto the dark pavement as the door creaked open slowly, protesting against the biting wind. A man in his late forties, wearing a grease-stained mechanic’s jumpsuit, poked his head out. He blinked rapidly against the harsh daylight, his expression a carefully rehearsed mask of utter bewilderment. He raised both hands slowly, palms outward, displaying an exaggerated posture of complete and total innocence.

"Is there a problem, officer?" the man asked, his voice cracking with a forced, raspy nervousness that immediately put everyone on edge.
Officer Henderson did not lower his stance. He stepped closer, planting his boot firmly on the running board to prevent the door from closing. "Step out of the vehicle, sir. Keep your hands where I can see them." The officer’s voice was remarkably calm, carrying the quiet authority of a man who had seen the darkest corners of human behavior and refused to be fooled by polite facades. Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew that face, and she knew the terrible secrets hidden behind those stained overalls.
