Chapter 1

The asphalt of the highway rest stop radiated a bitter, unrelenting chill that cut straight through the heavy fabric of Maya’s dark winter jacket. She stood shivering beside her mother, who wore a worn grey cardigan, and her father, whose brown jacket mirrored the one worn by the tall police officer standing a few paces away. Maya’s blonde hair was tangled and damp from the damp air, framing a face dominated by a swollen, darkening purple bruise around her left eye. She pulled her arms tightly across her chest, hugging her torso as if she could physically hold the terrifying memories inside her body and keep them from spilling out.
Just feet away, a large brown bloodhound strained against its leather leash, nose glued to the frosty ground. Officer Henderson watched the hound with a practiced, stone-cold seriousness, his hand resting casually near his duty belt. The dog’s tail wagged in a slow, rhythmic sweep before it suddenly lunged forward, dragging its handler across the grey pavement toward a nondescript white van parked near the perimeter fence. The rear windows of the vehicle were plastered with small, colorful handprint stickers, left behind like ghostly markers of innocence.

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. A fresh wave of sheer terror seized her heart, causing her to clutch her bruised face in trembling hands. She let out a small, stifled gasp, the sound lost beneath the hum of passing semi-trucks on the interstate. Officer Henderson pivoted sharply on his heel, his eyes locking onto the white van with sudden, calculated intensity. The bloodhound leaped into the air, its paws scratching frantically against the rear metal doors of the van, leaving faint smudges on the glass above the colorful handprints.
The officer strode purposefully toward the vehicle, his boots crunching loudly on the frozen gravel. He placed a firm hand on the van's side panel and shouted into the cold afternoon air, demanding that whoever was inside unlock the vehicle immediately. Maya watched through blurred vision, her mother wrapping a trembling arm around her shoulders. The metal doors rattled under the officer’s commanding grip, but the interior remained ominously silent, save for the faint, muffled hum of an engine idling somewhere deep within the mechanical bowels of the suspicious transport.
