The Lockbox Opens

At 10:00 AM, State Prosecutor Sarah Jenkins and Sheriff Miller gathered around Evelyn’s bedside.
On the rolling tray table sat the heavy brass key and the waterproof ledger Maya had kept hidden in her shoe.
"Deputy Reynolds retrieved the metal lockbox from Depot Locker 204 thirty minutes ago," Prosecutor Jenkins announced, opening a heavy manila folder. "The contents are extraordinary, Evelyn."
"What did my father leave?" Evelyn whispered.
"The original maintenance manifests and insurance dispatch logs from the Blackwood Mill," Jenkins explained, her eyes hard with professional vindication. "Richard Vance personally ordered the sprinkler system shut off twelve hours before the fire to claim the eighteen-million-dollar commercial payout. Furthermore, there are audio recordings of Vance instructing his private security contractors to force your vehicle off the road last night."
Sheriff Miller stepped forward, adjusting his duty belt. "The State Police arrested Richard Vance at his private estate twenty minutes ago. Cole was apprehended trying to cross the Canadian border at Highgate Springs. There will be no bail, Evelyn. Not for either of them."

Evelyn closed her eyes, resting her hand over her children’s heads. For five years, she had lived like a fugitive in her own hometown, hunted by the men who had murdered her husband and stolen their community’s dignity.
Now, in the clean morning sunlight of a hospital room, the shadow had finally lifted.
