The Unbroken Road

Years would pass, as years always do in the quiet rhythm of the mountains.

The gravel on Old Mill Road would be worn smooth by the passage of school buses, harvest trucks, and neighbors visiting neighbors. The saplings Maya planted along the fence line would grow into towering sunflowers that bowed their heavy golden heads toward the morning sun every summer.

Leo would grow tall and strong, inheriting his father’s gentle eyes and his mother’s fierce, unbending courage. Maya would go on to study law at the state university, carrying her grandfather’s brass key on her keyring as a permanent reminder that justice is not something given by the powerful, but something fought for and protected by the brave.
