The Reunion of Scars

Room 408 was quiet, filled with the rhythmic beep... beep... of a cardiac monitor and the soft morning light streaming through the large window.
Evelyn Linwood lay propped up on the hospital bed, an IV line in her arm and a white bandage wrapped around her brow. She looked exhausted, her face pale and lined with pain, but the moment the door swung open, her entire body straightened.
"Mommy!" Maya cried, running across the linoleum and burying her face gently into the edge of the mattress, careful not to bump her mother's bandaged ribs.
"Maya... my baby," Evelyn wept, her trembling hands stroking her daughter’s hair, kissing her cheeks, her forehead, her eyes. "You made it. You saved him."
Nora walked over to the bedside, gently lowering the sleeping infant into Evelyn’s free arm.
Evelyn pressed her lips against the baby’s downy head, letting out a long, shuddering sob that seemed to release five years of accumulated terror, grief, and isolation. "My little Leo. My sweet boy."

She looked up at Nora, her hazel eyes swimming with profound, unpayable gratitude. "You must be Nora Gable. The Sheriff told me what you did on the ridge."
"I just kept the porch light on, Evelyn," Nora replied with a warm, humble smile. "Maya did all the heavy walking."
