Chapter 7

Julian stared at his mother in absolute disbelief, the betrayal cutting deeper than anything Clara or Marcus had orchestrated. “Mother? You’re siding with her? After everything we built to protect the family name?”

“We didn't protect the family name, Julian; we buried it under layers of lies and cruelty,” Helen said, walking steadily across the tarmac until she stood mere feet away from her son. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears, looking at Clara with a heavy, unspoken apology. “I watched you do to Clara what your father did to me thirty years ago—systematically isolating her, stripping her autonomy, and weaponizing her love for her child as leverage. I stayed silent because I was a coward wrapped in silk. No more.”

Clara watched Helen with cautious vigilance, remembering the harsh hostility in the ballroom just hours prior. But seeing the older woman stand publicly against her own son in the freezing rain dissolved the last remnants of doubt.

Julian’s grip on baby Leo faltered for a fraction of a second, the overwhelming weight of familial mutiny finally breaking his iron composure. His eyes darted desperately toward the plane door, seeking a phantom escape route. But the jet engines were spinning down; the pilot had received the federal grounding order directly from the air traffic control tower.

“You’re destroying us all,” Julian whispered, his voice cracking with genuine panic.

“No, Julian, we are finally saving what’s left,” Helen replied softly. She turned to Clara, her gaze softening into something resembling genuine maternal warmth. “Go on, Clara. Claim your son.”

Clara stepped forward, closing the final distance between herself and Julian. He tried to pull back, but Helen placed a firm, unwavering hand on her son’s shoulder, physically anchoring him in place. Clara reached out, her fingers gently touching the thick grey wool of the blanket. For a terrifying second, she feared Julian would pull away, but the collective weight of the corporate collapse, the federal oversight, and his mother’s betrayal broke his resolve.

With a bitter scowl, Julian relinquished his hold, sliding the bundle into Clara’s waiting arms.

The moment baby Leo was pressed against her chest, a profound, electric wave of relief washed over Clara. She pulled the grey blanket back slightly to reveal her son’s sleeping face, perfectly peaceful, entirely unharmed. She kissed his forehead, her tears falling softly onto the soft fabric.

“He’s safe,” Clara whispered, holding her boy so tight she could feel his steady, rhythmic heartbeat matching her own.
