Chapter 3

Clara’s phone rang just as she stepped back out into the cool night air. The caller ID flashed a name she thought she would never see on her screen again: Marcus Vance, Julian’s estranged younger brother. Marcus had been banished to the London office two years ago after publicly disagreeing with Julian’s aggressive corporate takeover tactics. He had always been the black sheep of the family, possessing an artistic soul that clashed violently with the cold calculation of the Vance enterprise.

“Clara, I saw the live feed from the security cameras at the house,” Marcus said without preamble, his voice tight with urgency. “Julian is moving fast. He’s filing emergency travel papers tonight to take Leo out of the country to Zurich under the guise of medical treatment.”

Clara gripped the phone tighter, her knuckles turning white. “Zurich? He doesn’t have a passport for Leo. I hold the original birth certificate and dual-citizenship papers in my safe deposit box.”

“Julian had duplicate emergency papers forged through family connections at the federal bureau this afternoon,” Marcus warned, the line crackling with static. “He’s using his clout to bypass the standard waiting periods. If you don’t stop him before dawn, you won’t just lose custody; you’ll lose your son to a jurisdiction where Vance money buys every judge on the bench.”

“I have the storage locker documents, Marcus,” Clara said, her voice steady and resolute. “I have the proof of the forged psychiatric evaluations, the embezzlement trails, everything we need to dismantle his legal standing in one afternoon.”

“Documents won’t stop a private jet from taking off, Clara,” Marcus countered sharply. “We need a coordinated strike. Meet me at the Eastside diner in twenty minutes. I have something else you need to see—something Helen doesn’t even know about.”

The diner was a modest, fluorescent-lit sanctuary amidst the sprawling concrete jungle of the city. Marcus sat in a corner booth, wearing a rumpled trench coat that made him look more like a weary detective than an exiled corporate heir. When Clara slid into the vinyl seat across from him, she noticed the dark circles under his eyes, mirroring her own exhaustion. He pushed a manila folder across the table, his fingers lingering on the cardboard edge.

“What is this?” Clara asked, opening the flap.

Inside were medical intake forms from the hospital where Leo was born. But these weren't the sanitized records entered into the family archive. These were the raw nurse’s notes from the night of the delivery. Clara’s breath hitched as she read a highlighted line indicating that Julian had explicitly requested a DNA verification test be withheld from the official hospital registry—a test that had returned an anomalous result regarding genetic markers.

“Julian isn’t just controlling,” Marcus whispered, leaning across the table so his voice was barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. “He’s been hiding the truth about our family lineage, and Leo’s very existence threatens a secret that goes back thirty years. If we expose him, the whole house of cards collapses.”
