Chapter 5

The wind swept fiercely across the tarmac of the municipal airfield, carrying the sharp scent of jet fuel and rain. Clara and Marcus sat inside a nondescript rented sedan parked half a mile from the South Hangar, their headlights off to avoid detection. Through the rain-streaked windshield, the sleek silhouette of Julian’s private jet stood illuminated under the harsh glare of halogen floodlights. Armed security guards in dark tactical gear patrolled the perimeter, their breath pluming in the freezing air.
Clara’s phone buzzed with a scheduled automated email release. Exactly at 3:30 AM, the comprehensive dossier detailing Julian’s corporate embezzlement, forged medical records, and illegal asset transfers landed simultaneously in the inboxes of every member of the Vance Corp board of directors.
“It’s sent,” Clara whispered, her hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles ached.
Within four minutes, the chaotic fallout began. Through their police scanner app, they heard the encrypted radio chatter of Vance Logistics security scrambling. Then, Julian’s personal cell phone—which Marcus had tapped using an enterprise interceptor—lit up with an incoming call from the chairman of the board.
Marcus answered it via speakerphone, expertly modulating his voice to sound like an automated emergency dispatch service. “Vance Corp security alert: Critical asset freeze initiated. Board quorum requested immediately at headquarters.”
A muffled roar of fury echoed through the speaker as Julian realized his corporate empire was imploding in real-time. “Cancel all board actions! I am out of the country! Secure the perimeter!” Julian bellowed, his voice dripping with panicked authority before he slammed the line dead.
Seconds later, the heavy metal doors of the hangar rolled open, and Julian rushed out, clutching baby Leo—still wrapped tightly in the grey blanket—against his chest. He was flanked by two nervous bodyguards, scanning the darkness with frantic eyes. He needed to board that plane immediately to salvage his escape, but the sudden corporate crisis demanded his attention. He paused at the bottom of the aircraft steps, pulling out his phone to frantically dial his legal team.
“Now,” Clara said, opening her door before the vehicle had even fully stopped rolling to a halt.

She didn’t run blindly; she moved with lethal, focused precision. Marcus vaulted out behind her, sprinting toward the rear of the hangar to cut off the security guards’ line of sight. Clara stepped out of the shadows and directly onto the floodlit tarmac, her floral dress whipping violently in the jet wash.
Julian spun around at the sound of approaching footsteps, his face contorting into an ugly mix of rage and disbelief as he recognized her form cutting through the blinding light.
