Chapter 7

The safe house was located in a quiet, unassuming residential neighborhood fifty miles north of the city—a modest, brick-faced property owned by the state department’s protective services division. The interior smelled faintly of old timber and lemon polish, a stark contrast to the sterile opulence of the Sterling Hotel or the tense atmosphere of Elena's suburban home. Marcus carried a sleeping Chloe inside, wrapping her snugly in the oversized wool blanket before placing her gently on the guest room bed. The little girl barely stirred, exhausted by the emotional turmoil of the long evening.
Elena stood by the front window, watching the rain finally begin to taper off into a misty drizzle as dawn cast a pale, gray light across the horizon. Her mind was racing, connecting the dots of David’s old research with the data mirror pulsing silently on her encrypted laptop.
Marcus walked into the living room, handing her a steaming mug of black coffee. "Try to get an hour of rest, Elena. We have a long day ahead of us. The federal magistrate agreed to an early morning review of the preliminary files."
"Rest is a luxury I'll save for when Julian Sterling is behind bars," Elena replied, taking the mug and warming her hands against the ceramic. She looked at Marcus, her gaze unwavering. "Tell me honestly, Marcus. Can Julian’s lawyers block the federal filing? His family has funded judicial campaigns in this state for decades."
Marcus pulled up a chair opposite her, his expression serious. "Normally, yes. The Sterling name carries immense weight in local courts. But the files David compiled include direct wire transfers to federal oversight officials and international shell accounts. That crosses state lines and jurisdictional boundaries. It’s no longer a local matter the family can sweep under the rug with a generous donation."
Elena nodded, sipping the bitter coffee. "Good. Because every hour we wait gives Julian time to liquidate assets and scrub his digital footprint."
"He's already trying," Marcus said, tapping his tablet. "Our digital forensics unit flagged a massive data transfer from the Sterling Group's primary servers to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands at 3:00 AM. He's running."
Elena’s eyes narrowed. "Then we cut off his escape route before he reaches the airport."
Just then, a soft rustle came from the hallway. Elena turned to see Chloe standing in the doorway, rubbing her eyes sleepily, wearing a pair of borrowed oversized pajama pants. The little pink princess dress was draped neatly over a chair in the corner of the room, looking small and vulnerable in the morning light.
"Mommy?" Chloe whispered, her voice still thick with sleep. "Are we still at the hotel?"
Elena’s heart melted. She set her coffee mug down and hurried over, kneeling to wrap her arms around her daughter. "No, sweetie. We're in a new place. Just for a little while. Everything is going to be okay, I promise."

Chloe rested her head on Elena’s shoulder. "Can I wear my pink dress today?"
"You can wear whatever you want, baby," Elena whispered, fighting back the sudden sting of tears. "Mommy is going to make sure nobody ever scares you like that again."
