Chapter 3

The heavy silence in the grand ballroom was broken only by the sharp intake of breath from several prominent board members standing near the front. The mention of municipal oversight boards and encrypted cloud servers had instantly transformed the atmosphere from a petty social humiliation into a corporate execution. Julian Sterling took an involuntary half-step backward, his hands twitching nervously near the cuffs of his shirt. The golden armor of his family name was suddenly cracking under the weight of real, verifiable exposure.
"You're bluffing," Julian whispered, though the bold resonance had completely drained from his voice. His eyes darted frantically toward the exit, calculating his escape routes and the damage control he would need to deploy before the servers finished their sync. "A disgruntled woman making wild accusations at a charity gala. No court in the city would touch that data without a warrant."
"Warrants are for police investigations, Julian," Elena said, her voice remaining eerily calm as she maintained her protective stance in front of Chloe. "What I have isn't just data for a courtroom. It's a press release ready to drop into the hands of investigative journalists who have been trying to uncover the Sterling Group's zoning fraud for over a decade. All it takes is one tap on my screen."
Several guests near the periphery began to edge away from Julian, suddenly finding the intricate patterns on the ceiling far more interesting than the man they had been flattering just moments before. In high society, loyalty was merely a currency spent only when profitable. Julian Sterling was rapidly becoming toxic debt.
A middle-aged woman in a sapphire gown, Senator Arthur’s wife, cleared her throat and signaled her husband toward the side exit. The social ecosystem of the room was shifting in real-time, punishing failure with absolute ostracization.
Julian saw his network evaporating before his eyes. Desperation clawed at his composure. "Guards," he hissed, pointing frantically at Elena. "Take the phone! Take the bag! Do it now!"
The two security guards hesitated. They weren't just hired muscle; they were licensed professionals who checked their news feeds on their breaks. They knew the name Arthur, and they certainly knew the municipal board. Moving violently against a grieving mother in front of thirty witnesses while digital files were transmitting was a career-ending—and potentially prison-bound—mistake. They stood their ground, arms at their sides, refusing to advance.
"Traitorous idiots," Julian muttered under his breath, realizing he was entirely isolated.

Chloe clutched Elena’s skirt, whispering, "Mommy, can we go home now? I'm tired."
"We're leaving right now, sweetheart," Elena said, her eyes never leaving Julian’s trembling form. She didn't need to press upload just yet. The threat alone had achieved what a thousand legal letters never could: it had stripped the bully of his weapons. Without another word, Elena turned her back on Julian Sterling, the crimson fabric of her dress sweeping gracefully across the marble floor as she walked unhindered toward the open doors.
