Chapter 3

The ink on the paper was fresh, defying the timeline of a ghost. Marcus stared at the neat, sharp script, recognizing the distinctive flourish of Arthur Vance, the former chief financial officer who had supposedly perished in a fiery warehouse explosion six months ago. The police had closed the case, ruling it an accident caused by faulty wiring, but Marcus had never truly believed the official report. Standing in the diner, holding the physical proof that Arthur was not only alive but actively communicating with Claire, sent a cold shockwave through his chest.

"Arthur," Marcus breathed, the name feeling foreign and dangerous on his tongue. He looked up at Claire, his anger instantly mutating into a profound, chilling betrayal. "He’s alive. You knew all along, didn't you? You didn't lose the files; you were coordinating the handoff."

Claire collapsed onto the opposite bench, her strength entirely spent. The confident corporate climber was gone, replaced by a desperate woman cornered by her own deceit. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, dry sobs. She didn't deny it. The silence in her response was louder than any confession could have been.

Lily, watching the adults with an emotional intelligence far beyond her seven years, reached across the table and tentatively touched Claire’s sleeve. "Are you in trouble, Aunt Claire?" she asked softly, her previous defiance entirely replaced by a gentle, heartbreaking concern.

Claire lowered her hands, her eyes red-rimmed and hollow. She looked at Lily, then reached out to straighten the pink party hat on the little girl's head. "I made some terrible mistakes, Lily. Grown-up mistakes. But none of this was supposed to touch you."

"Except you used her as a mule," Marcus said harshly, refusing to let pity soften his stance. He tapped the paper against his palm. "You used a child's birthday party as cover to transport a dead man's instructions. Do you have any idea what kind of people are looking for Arthur? If they find out Lily was involved, she won't be safe anywhere."

The waitress finally found her voice, stepping out from behind the counter with a nervous cough. "Look, folks, I don't want any trouble in here. If you're having a domestic dispute, take it outside. Otherwise, I'm going to have to call the police."

Marcus turned his head, leveling a dark, exhausted stare at the waitress. "Call them," he said quietly. "File a report. Tell them Marcus Thorne and Claire Vance are sitting at booth four, holding evidence in a federal investigation. Let's see how fast they show up."

The waitress hesitated, looked at the knife still resting on the table, and slowly backed away toward the kitchen doors.
