Chapter 11

The chase through the rain-soaked industrial district was a desperate battle for survival. Marcus led the way, his boots pounding heavily against the slick asphalt, with Claire and Arthur struggling to keep pace behind him. Shouts echoed through the damp night air, followed by the terrifying pop of a warning shot that punched a hole through a nearby corrugated metal fence.
They burst out onto the main access road where Marcus had parked the sedan earlier that evening. The vehicle sat waiting under the amber glow of a flickering streetlamp, its dark silhouette offering a beacon of hope against the encroaching darkness. Marcus reached into his pocket, his fingers wrapping around the car keys as he sprinted toward the driver’s side.
"Get in! Now!" Marcus yelled, unlocking the doors with a sharp beep.
Claire scrambled into the passenger seat, panting heavily, while Arthur dove into the back, pulling the heavy metal toolbox in behind him. Marcus slammed his door shut, jammed the key into the ignition, and twisted it hard. The engine sputtered, coughed against the dampness, and then roared to life with a satisfying growl.
As Marcus slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, the rear tires spun furiously on the wet pavement before catching traction, throwing up a spray of muddy water as the sedan lurched forward. Headlights swept across the road behind them as a pair of dark SUVs barreled out of the warehouse access lane, giving immediate chase.
"They're right on our tail!" Claire shouted, looking back through the rain-streaked rear window.
"Hold on!" Marcus gripped the steering wheel with both hands, throwing the car into a sharp turn that sent them sliding onto the downtown highway. The high-speed pursuit tore through the deserted city streets, the roaring engines echoing off the towering concrete canyons of the financial district.
Marcus glanced in the rearview mirror. The pursuing SUVs were gaining ground, their high beams blinding him in the reflection. He knew the city layout better than anyone; he needed to shake them before they reached a bottleneck where traffic or police checkpoints could trap them.
"Where are we going?" Arthur asked from the back seat, clutching the metal box against his chest like a shield.
"To the corporate headquarters," Marcus said grimly, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Claire turned around in her seat, staring at him in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? The board building is locked down tighter than a vault at midnight!"
"Exactly," Marcus replied, his voice deadly serious. "If we're going to end this, we do it where it started. We take the evidence straight to the federal server room on the top floor. Once we upload those files to the SEC drop-box, every single executive, including ourselves, is on record. There's no hiding it anymore."

Claire stared at him for a long moment, the sheer audacity of the plan sinking in. Slowly, a grim, exhausted smile spread across her face. "You're actually going to burn it all down."
"To the ground," Marcus confirmed, pressing the accelerator pedal down until the engine screamed.
