Chapter 14

The wailing of police sirens echoed from the street below, cutting through the damp Chicago air and rising up the face of the glass tower like a chorus of judgment. Inside the server room, the tension dissolved into a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. The security director struggled to his feet, clutching his bruised knee, but he didn't try to run. He knew, just as Marcus and Claire knew, that the sirens outside belonged to federal agents who had already locked down the perimeter of the building.

Arthur sat slumped against the server rack, catching his breath while Claire pressed a clean handkerchief against a small scrape on his forehead. The metal toolbox lay open on the floor, its contents empty, its dark secrets now safely transmitted to the authorities who would dismantle the corrupt enterprise once and for all.

Marcus stood before the glowing computer monitors, watching the automated confirmation codes scroll continuously across the screen. He felt no triumph, only a heavy, sobering sense of release. The lies, the cover-ups, and the constant fear of discovery had finally come to an end.

"They're taking the elevators up," Arthur said quietly, his voice raspy as he looked toward the glass doors of the server room. "I suppose this is where we say goodbye."

Claire looked down at the older man, her expression softened by a mixture of lingering anger and sorrow. "You're going to prison, Arthur. We all are."

"Maybe so," Arthur replied with a faint, tired smile. "But for the first time in six years, I won't have to look over my shoulder in the dark. That's worth more than all the money in those offshore accounts."

Heavy footsteps echoed down the mahogany corridor, followed by the firm, authoritative voice of federal marshals identifying themselves. The glass doors slid open automatically, framing several uniformed officers and federal agents with badges displayed clearly on their chests.

"Marcus Thorne? Claire Vance?" the lead agent asked, stepping into the room with a stern expression.

"Yes," Marcus answered clearly, holding his hands out without hesitation. "We're right here."

The agents moved forward with practiced efficiency, placing them both in handcuffs with swift, professional precision. There was no resistance, no screaming, and no denial. As Marcus was guided toward the elevator, he looked back one last time at the glowing server screens, knowing that the truth was finally out in the open, where it belonged.
