Chapter 8

The wind howled around the open-air observation deck, rustling the fabric of Clara’s shirt as she stared at the woman who had orchestrated her downfall. Victoria stood calm and unyielding, her diamond necklace catching the neon flashes from the skyline below. She offered Clara a way out—a golden bridge built entirely upon compromise and further deception.
"What kind of arrangement?" Clara asked, her voice tight with suspicion.
"You hand over the physical backup drives and the digital keys to the municipal archive drop," Victoria said smoothly, stepping closer. "In exchange, our corporate legal team will execute a clean severance package. We clear your name of any direct criminal liability, reassign your employment history to a subsidiary overseas, and provide you with a clean slate in a jurisdiction where no one will ever find you."
Clara looked at Victoria in disbelief. "You want me to disappear and let you walk away clean? What about Leanne? What about the truth?"
"The truth is a luxury for people who can afford it, Clara," Victoria replied, her heavy dark eye makeup emphasizing the piercing coldness in her gaze. "Right now, you cannot afford it. If you fight this, you lose everything—your freedom, your future, your life. If you take my offer, you survive."
Clara looked down at her hands. The temptation was enormous. The thought of a quiet life away from the relentless pressure of the investigation, the courtrooms, and the fear of imprisonment tugged at the edges of her resolve. She remembered the warmth of the money in her offshore account, the illusion of safety it had once provided. For a long, agonizing moment, the silence between them was filled only by the roar of the distant city traffic.
Then, Clara thought of Leanne’s terrified screams from the day of the exposure. She thought of the black veins pulsing beneath the leather glove—a creeping horror that Victoria was willing to unleash upon the entire city just to protect corporate profits. Surrendering now would mean condemning countless others to the same fate.
Clara raised her head, pushing her wire-rimmed glasses up the bridge of her nose. Her eyes, though red and tired, burned with a sudden, fierce clarity. "No."
Victoria’s expression hardened instantly, the polite facade dropping away to reveal pure fury beneath her bold red lipstick. "You are making a catastrophic mistake, Clara. You have no idea what forces you are meddling with."
May you like
"I know exactly what I’m meddling with," Clara said firmly, stepping back toward the emergency stairwell door. "And I’d rather spend twenty years in a prison cell than spend another second helping you bury people alive."
Before Victoria could signal the security guards waiting in the shadows of the stairwell, Clara spun around and threw her weight against the heavy metal door, bursting through into the stairwell just as heavy boots echoed on the landing above her.
