Chapter 1

The digital clock in the corner of the municipal broadcasting room glowed with a harsh, unforgiving amber. Clara stood frozen on the cold linoleum floor, her wire-rimmed glasses fogged slightly from the rapid, shallow breaths escaping her lips. Her brown hair, pinned into a neat bun hours ago, had begun to unravel into loose strands framing a face pale with shock. The blue-and-white striped collared shirt she wore felt damp against her collarbone, soaked through with the sweat of absolute panic. Behind her, the massive overhead display cast a sickly green luminescence across the room, illuminating rows upon rows of incriminating bank transaction records. Those digital numbers were the receipts of her complicity, the digital footprints of a catastrophic betrayal that could no longer be contained within the sterile walls of a corporate boardroom.
Only moments before, her voice had echoed through the studio monitors, frantic and desperate, confessing to the entire state that she had lied under oath. She had looked straight into the camera lens and told the terrifying truth about the corporate executive who had ordered her to conceal a biological anomaly. "He told me to rip off his glove and grab Leanne!" she had cried out, the memory of that horrifying afternoon rushing back like a physical blow. She remembered the strange, pulsing black veins crawling beneath his skin, defying every known law of medical science. She remembered Leanne’s terrified screams as the strange infection was thrust into her path.
Across the studio, standing rigidly behind a polished mahogany podium, Victoria watched the collapse with absolute, chilling detachment. Victoria’s appearance was a stark contrast to Clara’s disheveled state. Her raven-black hair was styled in a sleek, architectural chignon, and her face was painted with heavy, dramatic dark eye makeup and a slash of bold red lipstick that seemed to mock the panic unfolding around her. Draped in a tailored black blazer glittering with thousands of tiny sparkly lapels, and adorned with massive diamond drop earrings and a matching necklace that caught the studio lights, Victoria embodied corporate untouchability. She did not flinch, she did not blink; she simply stared coldly and intensely straight ahead, her mind calculating the damage control required to bury Clara’s confession forever.

Clara’s hands trembled as she clutched a printed statement she had smuggled out of the financial department. The paper crinkled loudly in the silent room. She knew Victoria’s legal team was already mobilizing, ready to paint her as an unstable, financially compromised employee whose testimony was bought and paid for. But the wire transfer on the screen behind her could not be unwritten. Two hundred thousand dollars deposited into an offshore account just forty-eight hours after Leanne was silenced. The realization of what she had traded for that money hit Clara with crushing force. She had traded her integrity, her safety, and ultimately, an innocent woman’s future for a comfortable retirement fund that now felt like a prison sentence.
The studio door swung open with a muffled click, and two security guards stepped into the periphery of the light. Clara did not run. She stood her ground, clutching her glasses, her chest heaving as the consequences of her confession finally settled over her shoulders. The truth was out, raw and bleeding, and there was no turning back.
