Chapter 8 - Protocol Zero and the Burning Code

The wailing alarm inside the mansion pierced the night air like a siren, sending a flock of startled birds exploding from the branches of the oak trees lining the street. Julian stumbled backward, his face draining of all color as he stared at the smoking tablet in his hands.

"What is this?" Julian screamed over the noise, his composure completely shattered. He frantically tapped the screen, but it remained dead, the amber text frozen in place. "What did you do? What is Protocol Zero?"

Elena watched the glowing text from across the driveway, a sudden, cold realization washing over her. Her father hadn't just been a cryptographer on the run; he had engineered a failsafe that linked the digital assets directly to the physical survival of his family. The system wasn't controlled by passwords or server keys. It was tethered to living human DNA.

"Protocol Zero means the system recognizes an unauthorized breach of the primary node," Elena said, her voice cutting through the wailing alarm with absolute authority. She stepped forward, her dark eyes locking onto Julian's panicked face. "It doesn't lock the doors, Julian. It incinerates the local cache."

Marcus fell to his knees on the pavement, clutching his head in sheer terror. "Incinerates? You mean the house is going to... to burn down? Everything we own is in there! My servers, my prototypes, our clothes—everything!"

"Your greed built this prison, Marcus," Martha said, her voice devoid of pity as she looked down at her son. "And now the fire is cleaning it out."

Julian whipped around, grabbing one of his armed security guards by the collar of his jacket. "Get inside! Shut down the main server rack in the basement manually! Pull the hard drives out with your bare hands if you have to!"

The guard hesitated, staring nervously at the front door where thick plumes of gray smoke were now beginning to billow out from the hallway ceiling. "Sir, the smart locks are fusing shut. The interior doors are magnetically sealed. We can't get into the basement!"

"Break the windows!" Julian roared, shoving the guard toward the side of the house.

Elena didn't waste another second. She turned back to her car, opened the rear door, and unbuckled little Leo, who had finally woken up, crying softly against her shoulder. She handed the toddler gently to Martha, who cradled him securely against her chest, patting his back with soothing, rhythmic motions.

"Ma, take Leo to the end of the street," Elena instructed, her voice firm. "Get behind the police barricade if they arrive."

"And you, child?" Martha asked, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "Where are you going?"

"I'm going inside," Elena said, rolling up the sleeves of her blazer. "My father left something in that terminal, and if Julian's syndicate gets their hands on the physical storage media, none of us will ever be safe again."

Before Martha could argue, Elena bolted toward the front entrance of the burning mansion, disappearing into the billowing gray smoke just as a massive explosion echoed from the basement below.
