Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Master Suite

The abrupt amber glow from the master bedroom window cut through the darkness of the suburban night like a beacon. Marcus slammed the brakes of his car, shifting the transmission back into park with a harsh mechanical clunk. He stared up at the second floor, his mouth slightly open, the color draining completely from his face.
"That's impossible," Marcus whispered, his voice dropping to a breathless rasp. "The main breaker is pulled. The entire grid to the house was cut from the master panel in the hallway. There is no backup generator. I checked the specs myself."
Chloe pushed past Marcus's car door, wrapping her arms tightly around herself against the chill. Her designer dress, chosen for a high-end dinner party they had abandoned hours ago, offered zero protection against the autumn breeze. "Marcus, what is that? Who is up there? Did you leave a smart-bulb battery backup installed?"
"No," Marcus said, shaking his head slowly, his eyes wide with a sudden, dawning terror. "No, that’s not a smart bulb. That’s an incandescent lamp. Someone is using an old-fashioned generator, or..." He trailed off, swallowing hard.
Elena closed her car door with a gentle click, having successfully settled little Leo into his seat. She walked back toward the edge of the driveway, her expression darkening as she observed the glowing window. The silhouette of a person moved across the frosted glass—tall, deliberate, and entirely unfamiliar.
"You didn't just mortgage the house to fund your startup, did you, Marcus?" Elena asked, her voice dangerously quiet. She stepped closer to her brother, her eyes boring into his. "Who else has the keys to this property? Who else knew about the security override codes?"
Marcus looked away, refusing to meet her gaze. He stared intently at the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the leather. "It was just a temporary arrangement, Elena. The venture capital firm needed a collateral address for the secondary tranche of funding. It wasn't a big deal."
"A collateral address?" Elena's voice rose sharply, cutting through the quiet night air. "You used my house as collateral for a loan shark syndicate? Marcus, look at me!" She grabbed the top of his car door, forcing him to look at her. "Tell me right now who is inside my house."
Before Marcus could stammer out an excuse, the front door of the mansion clicked. Not the motorized smart lock, but the heavy mechanical deadbolt turning from the inside with a resounding metal clack. The door slowly creaked open, revealing a man stepping out onto the porch. He wore an expensive, rumpled Italian suit, a gold Rolex catching the amber light spilling from the doorway. He didn't look like a burglar or a thug; he looked like a predator who had just claimed his prize.
"Well, well, well," the man said, his voice smooth, dripping with condescension as he descended the stone steps. "The dutiful sister returns from the corporate salt mines. We were wondering when you'd show up to collect your belongings."
Elena stepped in front of Martha, shielding her mother and the car where little Leo sat sleeping. "Who are you? And what are you doing in my home?"

The man chuckled, adjusting his cuffs. "Your home, Ms. Vance? I'm afraid the title transfer was recorded three days ago. Marcus here signed over the deed to cover his initial losses. And as for me? I'm the new landlord." He paused, flashing a chilling smile. "And you owe me three months of back rent."
