Chapter 6 - The Ghost from Twenty Years Ago

The engine of Elena's car idled softly, vibrating through the leather steering wheel as the encrypted video call illuminated the dark interior of the cabin. On the screen, the elderly man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses stared directly at her, his expression a mix of solemn warning and profound urgency.

"Who are you?" Elena asked, her voice barely a whisper so as not to disturb little Leo sleeping soundly in the back seat. "How did you get this number?"

"My name is Viktor Vance," the man replied, pronouncing the surname with a heavy European cadence that sent a cold shiver down Elena's spine. "Or rather, the man your father spent his entire life running from. Turn off your headlights, Elena. You are being watched."

Elena instinctively glanced toward the mansion. Julian Cross was standing by the porch steps, furiously punching numbers into his own phone while barking orders at his security guards. The amber light from the master bedroom window still flickered, casting long, distorted shadows across the manicured lawn.

"My father passed away ten years ago," Elena said, her grip tightening on the steering wheel until her knuckles turned white. "And our last name isn't Vance by birth. It's a name we took when we immigrated. What do you know about my family?"

Viktor let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Immigrated? Child, your father didn't immigrate. He fled. He took the primary encryption key for the European Central Bank’s digital ledger and buried it inside the architecture of a suburban American home. A home that your brother just handed over to a man who works directly for the syndicate."

Marcus, sitting in his sports car a few yards away, rolled down his window and shouted across the gap. "Elena! What are you doing? Who are you talking to? We need to figure out where we're sleeping tonight!"

"Shut up, Marcus!" Elena snapped back, her patience completely exhausted. She looked back at the screen. "You're lying. My father was a high school math teacher. He worked eighty-hour weeks at a local warehouse just to put food on our table."

"Your father was a genius cryptographer who stole thirty million dollars in digital assets to keep them out of the hands of men like Julian Cross," Viktor corrected sharply, leaning closer to his camera lens. "And the master panel in that house isn't a smart home controller, Elena. It’s a terminal. The moment you cut the power, you triggered a forty-eight-hour countdown on the global transfer protocol."

Elena's breath hitched. The smart home panel. The very device she had watched Julian use to plunge the house into darkness earlier that evening.

"If Julian accesses that terminal before sunrise," Viktor continued grimly, "the keys to the entire financial network will be uploaded to the dark web, and your family won't just be broke—you'll all be hunted."

Before Elena could process the staggering weight of the revelation, the screen on her phone flickered violently, the encrypted call instantly terminating with a harsh static hiss. At that exact moment, every single exterior light on the mansion suddenly blazed back to life, flooding the dark driveway with blinding white illumination.

Julian Cross stood on the porch, a sickening, triumphant grin spread across his face, holding a portable battery-powered override tablet connected directly to the wall-mounted smart panel inside the front door.
