Chapter 4 - Whispers on the Line

Julian picked up the phone on the second ring, his thumb hovering over the screen before he pressed it to his ear. The line was silent for a long moment, filled only with the faint sound of crackling static and distant traffic, as if someone was calling from a payphone near a busy highway.
"Julian," a voice whispered. It was a woman’s voice, strained and breathless, like someone speaking in the dark while trying not to be heard.
"Who is this?" Julian demanded, leaning against the cold kitchen counter.
"Don't say my name too loud," the voice replied. It was Clara, Eleanor’s younger sister, the quiet black sheep of the family who had spent the last five years living in self-imposed exile in upstate New York. "I saw what happened at the dinner tonight. Arthur is furious. He’s already calling the board of directors. They’re drafting emergency guardianship papers."
Julian clenched his free hand into a fist, his knuckles turning white. "I have primary custody rights from our initial separation agreement, Clara. They can't just take her."
A bitter, humorless laugh came through the speaker. "Custody? Julian, you’re playing a game of checkers while Arthur is playing chess with a loaded gun. The judge who signed your temporary papers? He sits on the board of the Sterling Foundation. He owes Arthur his entire career. By morning, that agreement will be null and void."
"Why are you telling me this?" Julian asked, his suspicion rising. Clara had always kept her distance, watching the family drama from afar without ever taking a side.
"Because I know what they did to Eleanor when she was a child," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion. "And I see it happening to Lily. Arthur doesn't raise heirs; he breaks them until they fit the mold. If you stay in the city, they will destroy you, Julian. They’ll freeze your bank accounts, plant evidence, and have you locked away before you can even file an appeal."
"I can't run forever," Julian said, looking toward the hallway where Lily was sleeping peacefully.
"You aren't running if you have proof," Clara said urgently. "There’s a safety deposit box at the First National Bank downtown. Vault number four-zero-eight. Inside, there are medical records, financial audits, and diaries detailing how Arthur systematically concealed the family’s illegal offshore accounts. It’s enough to bring the entire empire down. Use it as leverage."
"How do I open it?" Julian asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.
"You need the physical key," Clara said. "And the key is locked inside Arthur’s private study at the estate. In the grandfather clock. You have until dawn before they audit the vault."
The line went dead with a sharp click. Julian lowered the phone slowly, staring at the blank screen. Clara had just handed him a suicide mission. Breaking into the Sterling estate wasn't just trespassing; it was walking straight into the lion's den.
He walked back to the window, watching the first pale streaks of gray light begin to pierce the dark sky over the city skyline. Time was running out.
He grabbed his dark hoodie from the chair, pulled it over his head, and checked his pockets. The heavy iron key to his car was there, along with his wallet. He walked into Lily’s room, kneeling beside her bed to brush a stray blonde curl from her forehead.

"I have to go fix this, baby," he whispered. "I'll be right back."
