Chapter 10 - The Digital Trap

The heavy steel vault door slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud that reverberated through the concrete floor of the basement. Pitch blackness enveloped the narrow aisle, save for the flickering amber glow of the emergency exit sign overhead and the pale light leaking from beneath the door frame. Julian stood frozen, his hand still resting on the laminate table where the manila folder lay open.
"They didn't just lock us out," Julian said, his voice dangerously calm. "They're trying to wipe the terminal logs."
Marcus pulled out his phone, tapping frantically against the black screen. "No signal. They've deployed a localized signal jammer in the lobby. We're completely cut off from the outside world."
"Not completely," Julian replied. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the flash drive Clara had given him—the one separate from the old hard drive Marcus had just downloaded. "Clara said this drive has an independent satellite uplink bypass. It doesn't rely on local cell towers or bank servers."
Marcus stared at the small piece of plastic in Julian’s hand, skepticism warring with desperation in his eyes. "If that’s true, it means Clara wasn't just a disgruntled family member. She was embedded in Arthur’s IT security team for three years before she cut ties. Give it here."
Marcus re-opened his laptop, plugging the second drive into the side port. A command prompt immediately appeared on the screen, bypassing the bank's local firewall entirely and connecting directly to an encrypted peer-to-peer network routed through a secure orbital satellite.
Lines of code began to stream down the display at blinding speed, automatically packaging the financial ledgers, the land grab documents, and the damning audio transcripts into a single encrypted file addressed directly to the United States Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy pounding echoed against the outer steel vault door.
"Open the door! This is federal marshals executing a search warrant!" a booming voice shouted from the lobby.
Marcus froze, his fingers hovering over the enter key. "Julian... federal marshals? Did Arthur actually manage to frame us?"
"No," Julian said, stepping forward and placing his hand firmly on Marcus’s shoulder. "Arthur didn't call the marshals. Clara did. She knew they’d try to trap us here. Hit send."
Marcus pressed the enter key. A progress bar flashed across the screen: Upload Complete. Transmission Verified.
Before the laptop could even register the confirmation message, the heavy steel vault door began to creak open, hydraulic pistons hissing as the massive locks retracted one by one. The glaring white light of the bank lobby flooded the aisle, silhouette figures pouring into the narrow space with drawn badges and leveled weapons.
"Hands where we can see them! Nobody move!" an agent barked, stepping into the aisle with his hand resting on his service weapon.
Julian raised his hands slowly, stepping in front of the table to shield Marcus and the laptop. He looked past the federal agents and spotted Harrison Vance standing in the doorway, his face pale and twisted in sudden, absolute terror as his phone buzzed incessantly in his hand.
