Chapter 3 - The Midnight Summons

Julian froze beside Lily’s bed, his hand lingering on the edge of the blanket. The second knock was louder, more insistent, rattling the cheap wooden frame of the apartment door. He glanced at the digital clock on the bedside table; it was past eleven o’clock. No one knew where they lived except Marcus, his former college roommate and current attorney, but Marcus never made house calls this late without calling first.
Stealthily, Julian walked out of the bedroom, closing the door until it was nearly latched. He crept down the narrow hallway, his bare feet silent against the linoleum floor. Peering through the peephole, he saw the broad shoulders of a man in a dark trench coat standing on the porch, but the brim of his hat shadowed his face.
Julian reached out and slowly turned the deadbolt, pulling the door open just enough for the safety chain to catch.
"Who is it?" Julian asked, his voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in his veins.
The man on the porch did not speak immediately. Instead, he reached into his coat pocket and slid a thick white envelope through the narrow gap in the door. It fluttered down onto the welcome mat.
"You shouldn't have walked out tonight, Mr. Hayes," a gravelly voice muttered from the shadows. "The Sterling name doesn't bend easily."
Julian threw the door open fully, ignoring the safety chain, but the porch was empty. The stairwell at the end of the breezeway echoed with the heavy, rapid thud of receding footsteps. Julian rushed to the railing and looked down into the courtyard, catching a glimpse of a dark sedan peeling out of the parking lot without its headlights on, disappearing into the dark city streets.
Slowly, Julian bent down and picked up the envelope. It was heavy, sealed with a glob of deep red wax stamped with the Sterling family crest—a rearing wolf holding a broken quill. His fingers trembled slightly as he broke the seal and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment paper.
The text was typed in a rigid, formal font. It wasn't a legal subpoena or a custody filing. It was an inventory list.
Listed item by item were the assets Julian had brought into his marriage, alongside the modest trust fund he had set up for Lily on the day she was born. Below the list, written in Eleanor’s sharp, sloping handwriting, was a single handwritten postscript: You have forty-eight hours to return our daughter, or we liquidate everything you ever loved.
Julian stared at the paper, the ink seeming to blur under the harsh hallway light. The Sterling family didn't just want Lily back; they wanted to erase Julian completely, leaving him destitute, powerless, and legally dead to the world.
He folded the letter, slipped it into his back pocket, and walked back to the front window. He pulled the blinds aside just enough to watch the empty street below. He knew he needed legal help, but Marcus was too cautious for this kind of war. He needed someone who knew how the Sterlings operated from the inside out.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed on the kitchen counter, lighting up the dark room with an unknown number.
