Chapter 6: The Unwelcome Arrival

Before Dr. Hayes could pack away his equipment, the heavy frosted-glass double doors of the office chimed softly, sliding open to reveal an unexpected and terrifying apparition. Bella stood in the entryway, looking like a high-fashion predator stepping onto a savanna. She wore a tailored emerald-green silk dress that contrasted sharply with the sterile corporate tones of the office, her blonde hair styled in an immaculate French twist. A diamond tennis bracelet sparkled on her wrist as she adjusted her designer handbag.

The temperature in the room dropped instantly. Conny stiffened, pulling his hand away from Sophia’s as if burned, a look of sheer panic flashing across his pale features. Eleanor’s face hardened into a mask of pure corporate calculus.

Bella cast a slow, assessing glance around the room, taking in Dr. Hayes with his medical equipment, Eleanor with her hands in her pockets, and Sophia standing defensively by the glass desk in her white corset top and chain belt. Bella’s lips curled into a sweet, patronizing smile that didn't reach her cold, calculating eyes.

“My, what a gloomy gathering,” Bella said, her voice smooth and melodic, carrying easily across the spacious office. She glided past Dr. Hayes without a glance, stopping a few feet from Conny. “Darling, you look dreadful. I told you that skipping your morning cardiology checkup to deal with family drama was a terrible mistake. And Sophia, sweetie, you look entirely unpresentable for a downtown office visit. Dressing like you're heading to a club doesn't help your credibility.”

Sophia bristled, taking a sharp step forward, but Eleanor’s hand shot out, catching Sophia’s arm with a surprisingly firm grip. Eleanor shook her head imperceptibly, warning Sophia not to take the bait in front of witnesses.

“Bella, what are you doing here?” Conny managed to ask, his voice strained and weak as he tried to straighten his tie. “This meeting was private.”

“Nothing is private when my husband’s health is at stake,” Bella replied smoothly, reaching out to adjust Conny’s collar with an intimate, proprietary gesture that made Sophia’s stomach churn. “Besides, the Vanguard executives are downstairs in the lobby. They wanted a preliminary word before the signing dinner tonight. I had to come up and rescue you from this… chaos.”

She emphasized the word chaos with a pointed look at Sophia. It was a masterclass in gaslighting, delivered with the casual elegance of high society. Bella had tracked them here, monitoring Conny’s digital footprint just as Sophia had monitored hers. She was here to ensure the narrative remained under her absolute control before the merger documents were signed.

Dr. Hayes coughed politely, breaking the spell of Bella’s dominance. “Mrs. Conny, your husband is currently experiencing a hypertensive episode. He is in no condition to meet with prospective investors or attend dinners tonight. I am ordering immediate bed rest.”

Bella turned her gaze to the doctor, her smile freezing into something razor-sharp. “Thank you for your professional opinion, Doctor, but my husband’s corporate obligations cannot simply be paused because of domestic whining. Conny Global has a multi-million-dollar future to secure today.”
