Chapter 3: The Price of Silence

Eleanor intervened before Conny could speak, stepping smoothly into the physical space between father and daughter. Her posture remained impeccably upright, the cream blazer accentuating her authoritative presence. She understood that every word spoken in this glass-walled fishbowl carried legal and financial weight. If Sophia’s allegations regarding Bella’s psychological and financial abuse were formally documented, the upcoming merger with the Vanguard Group could unravel in hours.

“Sophia,” Eleanor began, her tone a masterclass in corporate diplomacy, maintaining a calm that bordered on chilling. “Your father is under immense pressure. Whatever grievances you have with Bella, this office, during a corporate restructuring phase, is not the venue. Let’s handle this privately at the estate tonight.”

Sophia turned her gaze toward Eleanor, her eyes flashing with a cold, clear intelligence that caught the older woman off guard. Sophia was twenty-four, but the trials of the past year had aged her beyond her years. She adjusted the delicate fabric of her off-the-shoulder top, refusing to shrink under Eleanor’s supervisory gaze. “Private, Eleanor? You mean hidden away behind the iron gates where Bella can control the narrative, lock my bank cards, and pretend I’m unstable?”

Conny flinched at the word unstable. It was a term Bella had dropped into casual conversations with their family lawyer just weeks prior. The horror of what his silence had permitted washed over him anew. He looked between the two women—the daughter he loved and the partner who kept his business afloat—and realized he had built a gilded cage and handed the key to a monster.

Dr. Hayes cleared his throat softly, a subtle prompt that his time was finite. He stepped forward, breaking the heavy atmosphere. “Mr. Conny, your blood pressure reading from earlier is still dangerously elevated. If we cannot complete the baseline assessment now, I’ll need to recommend immediate hospitalization.”

Conny waved a dismissive hand at the doctor, his eyes still locked on Sophia. He couldn't hide behind a hospital bed today. The reckoning had come, personified in the young woman standing before him in white and silver. He took a deep, shuddering breath, finally finding his voice, low and raspy. “Eleanor, step aside. Let her speak. I need to hear every single word, even if it destroys me.”

The silence that followed was absolute. Eleanor didn't move immediately, her eyes narrowing as she calculated the damage control required. But seeing the absolute finality in Conny’s posture, she slowly stepped back, her hands returning to her pockets. The stage was set for an unvarnished truth.
