Chapter 9 - The Steam Trap

The superheated steam filled the junction room in seconds, turning the cold underground air into a blinding, suffocating white fog. Brad screamed, stumbling backward into the stagnant water as the searing mist brushed against his jacket. Mr. Vance coughed violently, his respirator mask slipping from his face as he gasped for clean air.
"Get down!" Maya shouted over the roar of the ruptured pipe. She lunged forward, grabbing Arthur's trench coat and dragging the old man behind a massive concrete support pillar just as a secondary blast of scalding water shattered the overhead utility conduits.
The yellowed manila envelope slipped from Arthur's grasp, tumbling directly into the fast-moving current of chemical runoff rushing toward the drainage grate.
"The evidence!" Arthur rasped, clutching his chest as he struggled to breathe through the thick humidity. "The files are going down the main culvert!"
Maya didn't hesitate. Ignoring the searing heat and the groaning concrete overhead, she threw herself flat into the freezing, contaminated water. Her hand lunged forward through the churning current, her fingers scraping against the slick plastic coating of the envelope just as it reached the edge of the metal grate. With a fierce yank, she hauled it back against her chest, clutching the damp documents tightly beneath her black hoodie.
Brad crawled toward them through the steam, his face red and slick with sweat. "Maya! The stairs are gone! The whole back wall of the stairwell just caved in from the weight of the gym floor!"
"We can't go back up," Arthur wheezed, pointing a trembling finger toward a rusted service ladder bolted into the far corner of the concrete wall. "That leads to the old storm drainage spillway. It empties out past the security perimeter fence near the south highway."
Mr. Vance staggered to his feet, holding his side where a piece of flying debris had grazed him. "Are you insane? That spillway hasn't been cleared in decades. It's a straight drop into a fast-moving river current!"
"It's either the river or the rubble," Maya stated coldly, pushing herself up from the water. She shoved the recovered envelope deep into her waterproof backpack and securely zipped it shut. She looked at Brad, whose arrogant varsity exterior had been completely stripped away, leaving only raw, desperate humanity. "You wanted to know what I could do, Brad? Here is your chance to find out."
Brad swallowed hard, his eyes wide in the dim red emergency light. He looked at the rusted vertical ladder, then back at the collapsing ceiling above them. "Lead the way, Reyes."

As Maya grabbed the first rusted rung of the ladder, her phone buzzed violently in her pocket. She pulled it out; the automated state grand jury upload had reached 100%, and a new emergency alert was flashing on the screen: County arrest warrants issued for Principal Henderson and the entire Oak Ridge Zoning Board.
