Chapter 4 - The Tremor Below

The floor beneath their feet gave a sickening lurch, sharp enough to send Brad sliding out of his chair and onto his knees. The harsh fluorescent lights overhead flickered wildly, casting stroboscopic shadows across the crammed office walls. A shower of fine white drywall dust rained down from the ceiling tiles, smelling faintly of damp earth and ancient iron.

"What was that?" Brad screamed, his voice cracking with panic as he scrambled away from the window. "An earthquake? We don't get earthquakes here!"

"Not natural ones," Maya said, her voice cutting through the rising chaos with icy calm. She didn't drop to the floor or panic; she braced her boots against the baseboard and watched the seismograph app open on her smartphone screen. The digital needle was spiking violently into the red zone. "That was a structural shear failure. The foundation settling beneath the gymnasium wing just gave way."

Principal Henderson grabbed his desk for balance, his face draining of all color. He looked at Maya not as a rebellious teenager, but as a lifeline in a disaster he had spent years ignoring. "The blueprints... the county said the reinforcement work was completed last summer. I signed off on the safety compliance reports myself."

"You signed off on forged documents because you wanted your athletic budget funded," Maya stated bluntly, pocketing her phone. She looked down at Brad, who was currently trembling on the floor. "Get up. If you stay down there, the falling debris is going to crush your legs."

Brad scrambled to his feet, his arrogant varsity bravado completely evaporated. "Where do we go? We need to pull the fire alarm!"

"The fire alarm system is routed through the main electrical grid in the basement," Maya replied, her dark eyes narrowing. "The same basement that just took the brunt of the structural collapse. If you pull that lever right now, you’ll short-circuit the emergency lighting and lock every magnetic exit door in the building."

Henderson stared at her in sheer horror. "How could you possibly know all of this?"

"Because my mother spent the last three years of her life mapping every structural flaw in this school before they pushed her off the construction site bridge," Maya whispered, the air in the room dropping to a freezing chill.

Before Henderson could process the devastating implication of her words, the heavy metal door to the main office burst open, revealing a terrified teacher covered in soot.
