Chapter 1 - The Sound of Breaking Glass

The fluorescent lights of Oak Ridge High School’s cafeteria hummed with the usual midday chaos, a dull roar of adolescent anxiety and superficial laughter. Maya sat at her usual corner table, her dark hair pulled back into a tight ponytail. Her silver hoop earrings caught the harsh overhead glare, and the silver cross necklace rested against her black tank top, half-hidden beneath her unzipped black hoodie. She opened her plastic lunch container, ready to eat the homemade pasta her grandmother had packed. Before she could take a single bite, a heavy hand slammed onto the laminate table.

"Mind if I sample the culinary arts of the quiet girl?" Brad asked, his voice dripping with condescension. He towered over her in his blue and white varsity letterman jacket, his short brown hair perfectly styled. Without waiting for permission, he snatched the plastic container right off her tray, chuckling lightly as he turned away.

Maya did not laugh. Her face tightened with a cold, intense annoyance that burned hotter than anger. She glared upward, her jaw locked into a hard line.

"Put it back, Brad," Maya said, her voice terrifyingly flat and controlled.

"Or what, little mouse?" Brad sneered, turning back with a smug grin, holding the container just out of reach. "You’re going to give me a stern lecture on cafeteria etiquette?"

"I am going to make you regret touching my property," Maya whispered.

"Try it," Brad laughed, taking a step closer. "Everyone’s watching, show us your hidden talents."

Before the laughter could fully leave his throat, Maya moved with terrifying speed. She stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the floor. She grabbed the collar of his varsity jacket with both hands and wrenched him forward with astonishing strength, using his own momentum against him. With a swift, brutal heave, she slammed him directly into the structural brick wall of the cafeteria. The impact echoed like a gunshot. Brad stumbled backward in absolute shock, tripping awkwardly over a metal desk and crashing to the floor as his lunch container shattered into a dozen pieces. Complete silence fell over the room. Students froze mid-bite, staring in disbelief at the fallen golden boy. Maya calmly zipped up her black hoodie, pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose with an ice-cold expression, and turned to walk away.

As she pushed open the heavy double doors into the hallway, the principal's voice crackled over the intercom, calling her name directly to the main office.
