Chapter 4 - The Scratching Behind the Wall

The rhythmic scratching grew louder, a steady, deliberate scraping of wood against plaster that sent a shriek of raw panic through Daniel’s nervous system. He clutched Sophie tighter against his chest, her small heart hammering wildly against his ribs like a trapped bird. Elena had already disappeared down the long, dim hallway toward the kitchen, leaving the heavy front door wide open to the empty suburban street. Daniel backed away from the threshold, retreating into the foyer to escape the mysterious sound, but the noise seemed to follow him, vibrating through the floorboards beneath his shoes.

“Daddy, make it stop,” Sophie whispered into his ear, her voice small and brittle. “They’re coming out of the hole.”

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. “What hole, Sophie? Have you seen something in the house?”

The little girl didn't answer immediately. She slowly lifted her head from his shoulder, her tear-stained face deadpan as she pointed a trembling finger down the dark hallway toward the basement stairs. The door to the cellar, usually kept firmly shut and locked with a heavy padlock, stood wide open. A pale, sickly yellow light spilled up from the steps, casting long, twisted shadows across the family portraits hanging on the wall.

“Elena!” Daniel shouted, his voice echoing through the silent, oppressive space of the ground floor. There was no answer, only the hum of the generator and the persistent scratching sound behind the wallpaper.

Driven by a desperate need for answers, Daniel carried Sophie down the hall, his eyes fixed on the gaping maw of the basement stairs. As he approached the threshold, a wave of cold, damp air rolled up from below, carrying the distinct metallic scent of old iron and wet earth. This didn't smell like their finished basement, the one with the home theater system and the plush leather sofa where they watched movies on Friday nights. This smelled ancient, forgotten, and deeply wrong.

“We shouldn’t go down there, Daddy,” Sophie whimpered, her tiny fingers digging into Daniel’s shoulders hard enough to draw blood. “That’s where the other man lives.”

Daniel halted with his right foot hovering over the first wooden step. His blood ran cold. “What other man, Sophie? Who are you talking about?”

Before she could reply, a heavy shadow detached itself from the gloom at the bottom of the stairs and began to ascend, moving with a slow, agonizing deliberation that made Daniel’s breath catch in his throat. A man’s hand appeared on the wooden banister—a hand wearing a familiar gold wedding band that caught the sickly yellow light. Daniel’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he looked down at his own left ring finger, where an identical gold band rested securely against his skin.

“You took too long coming down, Daniel,” a voice rasped from the shadows below, sounding eerily, impossibly like Daniel’s own voice.

Sophie let out a piercing, terror-filled scream that shattered the silence of the house.
