Chapter 13 - The Summit of the Core

The platform at the top of the core was bathed in a blinding, violet glare that made it impossible to see more than a few feet ahead. The air was thin, tasting of ozone and superheated steam. Daniel coughed, wiping sweat from his forehead as he scrambled onto the narrow metal grating that encircled the glowing glass column. Elena was already kneeling beside a massive, industrial wheel-valve stamped with heavy yellow hazard warnings.

“Help me turn it!” Elena screamed, bracing her boots against the edge of the platform and grabbing the spokes of the heavy wheel. “It’s magnetically locked!”

Daniel threw his weight against the wheel beside her, his muscles screaming under the strain. The metal felt ice-cold despite the ambient heat of the core. For a agonizing second, the wheel refused to budge, locked in place by the automated safety protocols of the failing facility. Below them, through the translucent floor of the platform, they could see the shadowy entity writhing at the base of the column, its dark tendrils clawing frantically at the glass, trying to pierce the final layer of defense.

“Together! On three!” Daniel grunted, his vision blurring with fatigue. “One! Two! Three! Push!”

They threw their entire body weight into the turn. With a deafening, metallic shriek that echoed like thunder through the chamber, the magnetic lock disengaged. The heavy wheel spun violently around, releasing a massive plume of white cryogenic steam that hissed into the air, instantly cooling the superheated chamber and dropping the ambient temperature by twenty degrees.

Across the room, the glowing entity shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as the cryogenic blast froze its dark tendrils in place, shattering them into harmless, glittering dust that drifted slowly toward the floor.

Elena collapsed against the railing, breathing heavily, her face pale and streaked with soot. Daniel stood beside her, gripping the handrail to steady his trembling legs as he looked down at the base of the core. The entity was gone. The dark matter had evaporated, leaving the control room silent save for the hum of the emergency backup generators settling into a steady, low rhythm.

Above them, through the reinforced glass ceiling of the subterranean bunker, a faint sliver of natural, unfiltered morning light cut through the gloom of the wasteland sky for the first time in four years.

Sophie drifted down from the ceiling, her form slowly dimming, the blinding aura fading back into the appearance of an eight-year-old girl with long blonde hair, freckles, and a tattered pink dress. She landed softly on the metal platform beside them, swaying slightly on her feet with exhaustion.

“Is it over, Daddy?” Sophie asked quietly, her blue eyes blinking with genuine, childlike weariness as she looked up at Daniel.

Daniel exhaled a long, shuddering breath, dropping to one knee to pull her into his arms. She felt warm, human, and fragile once again.

“Yes, sweetheart,” Daniel whispered, burying his face in her hair as tears finally broke free. “It’s over.”

May you like

Elena crawled over to them, wrapping her arms around both of them as they sat together on the cool metal platform beneath the morning light. But as Daniel closed his eyes in relief, a tiny, rhythmic tapping sound began to echo from the ventilation duct directly above their heads.
