Chapter 14 - The Tap in the Duct

The rhythmic tapping sound echoed sharply through the quiet chamber, cutting through the post-crisis exhaustion like a scalpel. Daniel stiffened, his arms tightening protectively around Sophie as he raised his head to stare up at the heavy metal ventilation grate set into the ceiling above the platform. Elena pulled back from their embrace, her hand instantly dropping to the empty holster at her hip, her face tightening with renewed dread.

“That’s not the wasteland entity,” Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the backup generators. “The frequency is too mechanical.”

Sophie didn't look afraid. She simply tilted her head, her blue eyes fixing on the metal grate with a quiet, knowing calm. The tapping stopped for a second, replaced by the unmistakable sound of a heavy bolt sliding out of its housing from the other side of the ductwork.

Clack.

Daniel got slowly to his feet, shielding Sophie behind his body as he picked up a discarded heavy wrench from the platform floor. “Who’s up there?” he called out, his voice echoing off the curved glass walls of the core. “Identify yourself!”

There was no verbal response from the duct. Instead, a gloved hand pushed the metal grate outward, letting it crash down onto the platform with a deafening metallic clatter. A pair of dusty tactical boots dropped through the opening, followed swiftly by a man wearing a heavy, unmarked grey uniform and carrying a sealed communication canister stamped with a red biohazard emblem.

The man landed lightly on the platform, his breath pluming in the cooling air. He raised his hands slowly to show he was unarmed, but his eyes darted nervously between Daniel, Elena, and the glowing core behind them.

“Stand down, Dr. Vance,” the man said, his voice clipped and carrying an accent that didn't belong to any local survivor network. “I’m Agent Vance. And before you ask—no, I’m not a simulation, and neither is the supply drop I just carried through the secondary maintenance shaft.”

Daniel lowered the wrench a fraction of an inch, his brow furrowed in profound confusion. “Vance? That’s my last name. What kind of sick game is this?”

“It’s not a game,” the agent replied, stepping forward and setting the heavy biohazard canister on the metal grating between them. He popped the latches with a sharp hiss. “The Genesis Project wasn't just a localized containment experiment, Doctor. It was a global seed vault. And you weren't trapped here by accident. You were put in cryo-lock to manage the subject until the surface radiation levels dropped to zero.”

Elena stood up beside Daniel, staring warily at the open canister. Inside rested a thick stack of physical paper documents, a satellite transceiver, and a heavy brass key that looked identical to the one Elena had carried earlier that morning.

“If the radiation dropped,” Elena asked suspiciously, stepping between the agent and Sophie, “why did the containment field try to wipe our memories and trap us in a loop?”

Agent Vance offered a grim, humorless smile. “Because the security protocol didn't trust you to remember the truth until the subject reached full maturity. And looking at her right now...” He glanced down at Sophie, who stared back at him with an inscrutable expression. “...she’s reached it ahead of schedule.”

Before Daniel could process the agent’s words, the satellite transceiver inside the open canister suddenly chimed, automatically initializing a connection to an unknown receiver on the surface. A voice crackled through the small speaker, broadcasting a message that froze all three adults in their tracks.

“*Attention Sector Seven, this is orbital command,*” the synthetic voice announced clearly. “*The perimeter has been cleared. Subject Seven is cleared for extraction. Execute final protocol.*”

Agent Vance slowly reached behind his back, not for a weapon, but to click a small remote control attached to his belt.

“I’m sorry, Doctor,” the agent said softly, his eyes darkening as a heavy steel bulkhead slammed down over the exit stairwell, sealing them inside the core chamber forever. “Extraction means the simulation is over. And the real world isn't ready for what comes next.”
