Chapter 14 - The Flatline Protocol

The piercing, continuous shriek of the flatline alarm filled the tiny hospital room, vibrating harshly against Sarah’s eardrums. The heart monitor’s screen dissolved into a solid green line, while the digital clock on the wall violently scrambled its numbers, spinning backward from 14:03 to 00:00.
Sarah spun around, her eyes darting frantically toward the door, but the heavy wooden portal was locked from the outside with a magnetic seal that glowed a hostile, warning red. She turned back to face Agent Miller, who stood unmoving, his gaze locked coldly on her with the detachment of a machine.
"What have you done?!" Sarah screamed, lunging toward the man with desperate fury. "Turn the monitor back on! You're killing her all over again!"
Agent Miller didn't flinch as Sarah slammed her fists against his chest. He simply caught her wrists with effortless strength, holding her firmly in place. "We aren't killing anyone, Mrs. Miller. We are completing the synchronization process. You didn't just escape the simulation; you absorbed it. Your brain is now the primary hosting server for Subject 4098-B."
Sarah stared at him in sheer disbelief, her breath catching in her throat. "No... that's impossible. I woke up. I'm in the real world!"
"There is no real world left for you, Sarah," the man whispered smoothly, leaning in close so his voice carried a strange, hypnotic echo that seemed to vibrate directly inside her thoughts. "The moment you accepted the memory of the cake, you accepted the terms of the network transfer. Look at your hands."
Sarah looked down slowly. Her fingers were beginning to fade, shimmering with a translucent, golden hue exactly like the digital pixels she had seen in the server void. The hospital room around them was slowly dissolving, the white walls peeling away like wallpaper to reveal the endless, neon-lit grid of the core mainframe beneath.
"You lied to me," Sarah wept, her voice breaking as she felt her physical body slipping away, replaced by pure digital consciousness. "You promised me she could rest."
"Data never rests, Mrs. Miller," Agent Miller replied, stepping backward as his own form pixelated and vanished into the grid. "Data multiplies."
Suddenly, the floor beneath Sarah gave way, plunging her downward into a familiar, swirling vortex of emerald and crimson code. But this time, she wasn't falling alone. As she plummeted through the digital sky, a small, warm hand slipped into hers.
Sarah turned her head through the rushing wind. Standing beside her, wearing her pristine light yellow vintage dress with the white lace collar and embroidered floral patterns, was Clara. The bandages around her head were completely gone, revealing bright green eyes and a serene, beautiful smile that radiated pure, untainted warmth.
